It's happened again. Why should I go on "crunching" tasks when every time there's an outage my RAC's slip backwards. Very frustrating. I've got upto 5 days tasks to run should I say no more. Power usage (carbon credits) are starting to hurt me.

#1. This isn't a RAC race, if you are in it for that I would find a project that gives more credits per work unit. If you are going to count anything look at your total not your RAC.

#2. You RAC returns to normal once the servers come back up, and sometimes higher than you were at depending on how long the downtime was.

Back to the original topic . . .

I have now had enough results verified that I feel comfortable in declaring this experiment a success . . . averaging 4 units about every 36 minutes.

Until I can get another GTX 460, I'll keep running the 9800 GTX+. My RAC is up over 15500 and still climbing. I expect it to reach about 17-18000.

That's a nice gain from an outdated idle card.

Yeah that's not bad at all for a 9800 running 2x the WU's. Any bit extra is extra, have you thought about trying only one at a time on both cards to see if you actually get more units per day done than where you are at now?

Yeah, BeNT,

Problem was, my 460 GTX was faster at 2x than the two cards were at 1x. That's why I settled for this arrangement.

Good thing is, I finally managed to scrape enough cash to order a second 460, so in about a week, I should really be crankin'! :)

Should be a nice setup, those little 460's people seemed to be rather pleased with them. From what I can tell if I would have the chance to do it all over again I would have ordered two of those instead of a 480.

What's REALLY fascinating to me right now is the GTX 560. 1262 vs 907 (for the 460) GFlops. For reference, the gtx 480 is 1334 and the 470 is 1088. That's a mighty nice bump in performance and the 560 can be gotten for only slightly more than the 460 1gb model. NVidia is really offering a ton of bang for your buck with the 560 when it comes to seti. When we get the FERMI optimizations, we will see even BETTER performance than we're seeing now.

Basically, with a decent overclock on the 560, you're going to have 480 performance for about half the price. Check the top hosts list and you'll see that many of them have 2 or more 480s in their computers. Those were $500 per GPU. Now you can get virtually the same performance for just a tad bit over half the money. I love technology!!

Of course you could also look at ATI/AMD, which I believe is currently the dark horse. Raistmer is busting his butt to increase performance and get an app out there for the ATI users. I've been fortunate enough to be one of the beta testers and I will tell you that running seti on an ATI GPU is F-A-S-T. The 5870 has 2700 Gflops of performance just waiting to be unleashed. I don't know how the 6990 will work with seti, when it comes out, but that may be THE top single-slot cruncher once the application issues all get sorted out. I'm guessing we'll see somewhere in the neighborhood of 5500-6000 Gflops from that beast. The downside is that you'll be paying out the rump for it.

Currently, when it comes to value for your hard-earned money, the 460/560 destroy everything in their paths. I am definitely going to be watching the top hosts lists because it's only a matter of time until we see people with 3 or 4 560s creeping up toward the top, giving Todd a run for his money. ;)

Hi,

my 2GTX470

27.01.2011 23:44:27 NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 470 (driver version 26658, CUDA version 3020, compute capability 2.0, 1248MB, 1326 GFLOPS peak)
27.01.2011 23:44:27 NVIDIA GPU 1: GeForce GTX 470 (driver version 26658, CUDA version 3020, compute capability 2.0, 1249MB, 1335 GFLOPS peak)

they run like a GTX480 1334

price 210 Euro each

we will see what GTX560Ti will done.

Well, I decided to cut both back to 1 unit at a time to lower the stress on my boards. Gave me a 4 degree drop in temps.

It'll be interesting to see what happens to my RAC over the next couple of days. I should be getting my second GTX 460/768 on Wednesday.

By the way, my 512MB 9800GTX+ was using "609 MB" of memory according to my EVGA Precision tuning program . . . interesting.

I get your point but in the top 10 all but one are running Nvidia 200 series, more of them are running 295's than anything else. Fermi isn't optimized right now which sucks, if it was we would be putting higher numbers on the boards than anything from the 200 series. The 560's are going to be a really nice cards for sure, and the price seems about right. It'll look more attractive after it's first price drop that I bet will be happening shortly into Q2' of this year or before with ATi releasing their new toys.

Right now, the 295s are still winning the race but keep checking here, Lunatic's are working hard to get a new opt-app out for the fermi cards and that should be a real game changer. The new 500 series of cards haven't really been around long enough to tell but they might just unseat the 295s from the looks of the results so far.
