Now as much as that would sound like a comment some would think might come from me.
I would not propose nuking Somalia..most of the population has little or nothing to do with this. What I have said should start happening is to start blowing their little skiffs outta the water the minute they start anything remotely menacing. You say these are little pawns, right? Well, you blow enough of 'em up and there will be few left who are willing to be the pawns. As well as circumventing the hijacking in the first place.

As long as they know that almost all ships traveling this area are unprotected and there is little risk against the millions in ransom they have been getting paid, this is just gonna continue ad infinitum.

Pirates are pirates, and the world community needs to start dealing with them as such. All ships traveling through this region should be required to have heavily armed security on board. And we certainly have satellite coverage of this region, and should be able to track their activities to and from a 'mother ship'...
So then we blow that out of the water. Now we are getting some of the kingpins.

We don't need a political action in Somalia to put an end to this. It can be handled where it's happening...at sea.

Obama hasn't the guts, he is too European. If he had the guts a little memo saying all pirates are illegal foreign combatants and their right is a Captain's mast. Upon conviction punishment is to take a long walk on a short plank. The Europeans want a catch and release program so that is what it will be. Now if we could make paying ransom a life no parole sentence so those European insurance companies got the message, all incentive to be a pirate is gone and the problem goes away.

I cannot condone what they've done and whatever punishment is decided is fine, but I would like to also see some measure of social change that would allow these men an alternative to piracy.

I'm sick of the conservative idea of cutting everything to the bone when it comes to social programs and then turning their guns on those who strike back to survive.

And just what are they qualified to do? Dig ditches? Maybe Canada has a lot of ditches that need to be dug. Import them and have them dig ditches cheaper than Canadian's dig ditches. That will be a real win-win for you.

Get real Robert. If they have a ship that can operate for weeks 600 miles off the coast they aren't desperate, they are wealthy! They are criminal thugs and hoodlums and should be treated like the bottom feeding scum they are. They should be fed to the bottom of Davy Jones locker and PDQ.

I know you so desperately want to make these wealthy criminals into the poor masses that are in that region, but they aren't them. They are entirely different people. As they are different they need a different solution.

As to those masses, there is a fundamental problem. The more food you give them, the faster they breed and consume even more food. The earth can not produce enough food to keep up with the masses of humans any more that it can produce food as fast as a plague of locusts can strip a region. Eventually you end up with mass starvation and 90+% of them have to die from hunger.
