I cant figure this out.....six cores, gtx 450.....and i cant outgun yu guys here???? Whats wrong here.....i run 24/7/365 and i cant get ahead of some you guys here.....

There's nothing really wrong at your side except for the fact that you're using standard 'stock' apps sent automaticaly to your host by the project. Most of the people you're trying to outgun here optimise their rigs with 3rd party apps. There is plenty usefull threads around here you might start with and when you're done reading visit the Lunatics to get the latest v.037 Unified installer.

Who the hell is General Failure and why is he reading my harddisk?¿

Makes me and my little two-banger with a 9500GT look real good!! :-)

Seriously though, optimization is the way to go. The thing is there are some drawbacks. You have to keep on top of it as the optimized apps don't automatically update when something changes at SETI. Also, the guys at Lunatic's are always improving their apps so you have to keep an eye out for changes from them. And, optimized apps cause your machine to do a lot more work so you have to watch to make sure you don't overheat.

If you can live with those minor difficulties then definitely go for the optimized apps and you will soon be up there with the big guns!

No need to learn c++, just download the installer, unzip it and run it like any other installer. You will have to answer a few questions but nothing hard. Since you are running an AMD machine you should pick the SSE3 amd for the instruction set and be sure to put a check in the boxes for AP and for running GPU. The installer will then load everything you need.

The stock SETI apps have to run on many different types of machines, they have to be pretty generic. The optimized apps are custom made for each type of machine so can be a lot more specific hence much faster than stock. The stock apps do include a lot of improvements supplied by the optimizers but again can't be as specific.

Sorry, just now saw your reply. From your second reply I guess you answered your own question though. Glad you got it running. If it gives you any trouble be sure and come on back and we will be glad to help.

One other thing I just wanted to mention, AMD has a bad habit of stalling out on some work units and some GPUs were getting a lot of -12 errors. The optimized apps have found a way to cure that too. You should have no problems now.

Okay Jtramer,
Ready to try getting your core2 with the 8400 optimized? It's pretty much the same procedure but be sure to pick the 64bit installer. As for the instruction set, I would recommend the SSSE3. You may be able to run the SSE4.something too. To find out for sure you should download and run CPUZ. It's easy to find with a quick google search. It will tell you exactly which set you have. There is very little difference between the two though so you might want to try each to see which seems faster on your machine. Other than that it is just like you did for the AMD machine.

Another thing you may want to try. Your 450 fermi GPU is capable of running more than one WU at a time. It's a simple change to one section of your app_info file. If you would like to try it just ask and I'm sure one of the guys running fermi cards will be glad to tell you exactly how.

Again, I want to stress you must keep an eye on your machines and watch here in these forums for any changes that might affect your machines.
Happy New Year and happy crunching!

Congrats on getting your configuration setup correctly! Once you have seen what it can do you can make it crunch two at a time on that Fermi card of yours and push that RAC a bit higher.

Go into your app_info.xml in your boinc data directory for Seti. Find the line that reads:

<coproc>
            <type>CUDA</type>
            <count>1</count>
        </coproc>

And change the "1" to a "0.5" for two works units. You can also try a "0.33" for 3 work units. Just make sure you watch the times and figure out which one is faster for the most throughput. Happy crunching!

Can't help you there, all I've got is my little 9500GT. I'm sure someone will be along to give you an idea before long though.

North of 13,000, given you also have your CPU running seti. I would estimate 15-16K

While mine isn't a budget quad my Q9650 / GTX 480 is up to 17k + by itself! I guess if you compare it to an i7 it would be considered budget no? Then again I also don't run Seti around the clock as I do game a good bit and work on other things on the computer.
