Something simple and somewhat foolish for Mystery Photo Game 9.

Win by naming where this photo was taken.
A bonus point for naming the type of beverage ... as my friend in the photo would say it.

Beer?

Afghanistan is the correct continent, however not the correct country. (And the place name within the country is required to win.)

Beer is the correct beverage (of course!), however you need to know the correct region to get the language to then say "beer" in it.

As a further hint - perhaps. This place is a spot I would never have considered thinking I could drink a beer at.

That would be the Great Wall of China.

The red star on the caps tells me China.

Edit: Place The big wall of China.
Edit 2, Beer in Chinese: 啤酒

Yes Sten-Arne, the place is indeed the "Great" wall of China.
And "pijiu" (in pinyin) or as you wrote " 啤酒 " in mandarin characters is 'beer' in Chinese. Being able to say something that sounds like "pee joo" is a useful bit of knowledge on the great wall.

Drinking a beer on another UNESCO World Heritage Site; in China. With the ghosts of Nixon, and every other western head of state in the last 50 years walking around me. Who'da thunk it?

(Btw this is the Mutianyu section of the great wall about 70 km's from Beijing.)

Sten-Arne wins. Congratz. PM to follow.

Now, this may be a bit harder I believe. Let's say it is an unlikely place to choose as your favorite holiday destination.

To begin the narrowing process:
a) Mediterranean Sea somewhere?
and then
b) Algeria?

Is that in Somalia

Right country, what city and specifically what part of the city?

OK; so many possibilities.
It could be pirate headquarters, or warlord headquarters.

Since the place doesn't have 60 or 70 ships parked out front waiting for ransom, lets go with the warlords and say:

a) the city of Mogadishu.

b) Regards "what part of the city" does the photo show: I'd answer only somewhat facetiously "the only part still standing". ??

I think this photo depicts a place that is perhaps just far enough off the beaten track, and forgotten by time, to be a challenge.

What is the name of this place?

Is it a monastery?

Is it along the Mediterranean coast someplace?

Is it a monastery?

A monastery? With all those gunports and clear lines of fire?

Redefines my idea of Christianity somewhat.

Yikes; so much for thinking it will take a while to figure this out … .

@ Sten-Arne: not a slave trading fort, nor along the African coast.

@ John M: No, not a monastery. Yes, is in the Mediterranean.

@ Richard: I’m not sure about whether there once were gunports or clear lines of fire. See next answer.

@ Zeus: Yes, the structure served as a prison. And also yes, this is on an island. I can’t be certain about the God-forsaken part; it is in the Mediterranean after all.

[edit]Yep, I had a good hunch. Immediately reminded me of a prison in Panama from Prison Break show ;-)
It's the abandoned jail on Santo Stefano island in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the west coast of Italy.[.edit]

What are you guys like?
Sure says I. Find an obscure island in the middle of nowhere that seems to have not been visited in the past 20 or 30 years ... .

41 minutes later =/- 44 seconds there are not one but two correct solutions.

Congrats Sten; take it away. PM to follow.
Congrats also to (slow-typing!) Zeus.
