I think this photo depicts a place that is perhaps just far enough off the beaten track, and forgotten by time, to be a challenge.

What is the name of this place?

For some reason this makes me think about some old and forgotten slave trading fort along the African coast somewhere.

Is it a monastery?

Is it along the Mediterranean coast someplace?

Is it a monastery?

A monastery? With all those gunports and clear lines of fire?

Redefines my idea of Christianity somewhat.

Yikes; so much for thinking it will take a while to figure this out … .

@ Sten-Arne: not a slave trading fort, nor along the African coast.

@ John M: No, not a monastery. Yes, is in the Mediterranean.

@ Richard: I’m not sure about whether there once were gunports or clear lines of fire. See next answer.

@ Zeus: Yes, the structure served as a prison. And also yes, this is on an island. I can’t be certain about the God-forsaken part; it is in the Mediterranean after all.

Oh I got it.

It's Ventotene, an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the coast of Campania, Italy. It is the remains of an ancient volcano, and is part of the Pontine Islands. In Roman times it was known as Pandataria and Pandateria. It is also a commune belonging to the province of Latina (Lazio).

[edit]Yep, I had a good hunch. Immediately reminded me of a prison in Panama from Prison Break show ;-)
It's the abandoned jail on Santo Stefano island in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the west coast of Italy.[.edit]

What are you guys like?
Sure says I. Find an obscure island in the middle of nowhere that seems to have not been visited in the past 20 or 30 years ... .

41 minutes later =/- 44 seconds there are not one but two correct solutions.

Congrats Sten; take it away. PM to follow.
Congrats also to (slow-typing!) Zeus.

Ok, here's another one, that may or may not be hard to solve. Where is it located, and what purpose does it serve?

Clue: Nikodemus.

Sten, you are kiddin' me once again ;-) But this time I wont bother with extracting frames from my mini DV collection! I've been to Metéora two times so far and visited every one of those monasteries. And this one, Holy Monastery of Rousanou, is my favourite.

[edit]Nearly fell off the cliff trying to make some great shots.[edit]

Geeze, you're good Zeus. Completely right on this time too.

Take it away.

Congratz Zeus. And I am very very envious. This looks like a spectacular spot of the planet to visit.

Thanks, and I am envious too cause I'm sure there is quite enough spectacular spots across the Atlantic which I'd like to visit.
But here's another one... Name the place, it's not hard at all.

Yes. this rings a bell for me too. I kind-of recall this being a hot-water mineral spring precipitating gypsum and other carbonates. In europe somewhere; I defer to skildude who says Spain.

You're on the right trail. It is in Europe, but not Spain.
I was kinda hoping that I'll be able to hide clues a bit longer, cause this place has it's cousin in the Yellowstone. But no, you are immediately crossed over the pond ;-)
