Well, no one threw rocks at her head but this woman is just as dead. The state cannot continue to be permitted the power to take the life of one of it's own citizens.

Umm.....I disagree. I saw no testing done to establish her mental competency and she knew what she was doing when she made the arrangements for the assassinations.

Lewis got out of bed, unlocked the door to their mobile home and put the couple's pit bull in a bedroom so the animal wouldn't interfere.

She purposely allowed her husband and stepson to be killed after enticing the killers with sex.

No pity here...just as the person who murdered one of my best friends in Oklahoma City on 9/16 (Cause of Death: Blunt Force Trauma according to Erik's mom) --imho--deserves to die as well.

At least in the USA, there can be some confidence (at least usually), that there has been an honest investigation and a very good attempt to unravel the truth with as little bias as possible. I guess that's why most of your "death row" condemned die of old age before being put out of their misery.

In stark contrast, the Iranian political farce and circus in which Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani is being sickeningly kicked around the world like some plaything, the game looks like ever more that she is a just a very unfortunate pawn in whatever ongoing power struggles. "Justice" and honour have been long ago lost by Iran in this case:

Iran stoning case woman Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani to be hanged for murder

The new fate planned for Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani was announced by Iran’s national prosecutor general, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, at a news conference in Tehran today.

“According to the court’s ruling, she is convicted of murder and her death sentence has priority over her punishment [for committing adultery]”, the Tehran Times reported, citing Mohseni-Ejei.

The newspaper said that the prosecutor’s remarks mean Ashtiani - an illiterate 43-year-old Azeri mother of two whose husband was killed by her cousin - will not be stoned to death for committing adultery because she should first be executed for murder.

Final verdict not yet decided on Iranian woman sentenced to stoning

A final verdict has not been decided yet on the case of the Iranian women who was sentenced to death by stoning for committing adultery, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

This announcement comes amid reports that Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, will be hanged for murdering her husband, a charge her lawyer denies.

At his weekly press briefing Tuesday, Foreign Ministry spokesman, Ramin Mehmanparast, said the judiciary is still reviewing the case against the Iranian mother of two.

My mother is innocent

Perhaps I am not in a position to write a letter to 27 European and Western countries, but what can I do? I have no other hope but you, dear ones. I have no more tears to shed. The only thing I have left is a lump in my throat. I only hope that God helps me in writing this letter. I have lost my father, and now this government wants to take our mother from me and my sister for a crime that she has not committed.

Contrasting (or not) with the treatment meted out to an internet blogger striving for dialog and peace:

Iran blogger jailed for 19 years

... Mr Derakhshan, who holds dual nationality, said he travelled there on his Canadian passport. But admitted on a blog post before his arrest that the aim of the visit was to try to connect the Iranian and Israeli peoples.

A website close to the government said on Tuesday that the Revolutionary Court, which deals with security charges, found Mr Derakhshan guilty of collaborating with “hostile governments”, spreading propaganda against the Islamic regime and launching obscene websites. ...

Thanks Blurf. Sorry, don't worry, there's many views of any story. My comment was more to counter some of the shameless propaganda being spouted by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the media...

In the balance of power and what appears to be various political infighting... She still needs the world's spotlight on her and for Iran to be reminded that their great nation is being watched and judged by the world for their deeds.

'No decision' on fate of Iranian stoning woman

...The announcement follows conflicting reports that she would hang for her husband's murder and that her stoning sentence for adultery was confirmed.

Her lawyers insist she is innocent.

The BBC's Tehran correspondent says the confusion may reflect government uncertainty over what to do, following international outrage over the case. ...

... All very strange...

The two petitions running for Sakineh are:

Avaaz: Stop Stoning!

and

Help us free Sakineh

The Avaaz advertising campaign to push the politics is:

save_sakinehs_life

The story continues:

The various petitions are still creeping up ever higher. The story twists yet further:

And has gone quiet for this week.

Looks like her children are now being threatened:

Iran: Sakineh's children ask Italy for asylum

... "Our condition continually gets more difficult and and we are scared of getting arrested," Sajjad and Sahideh Ghaderzadeh said in a Tuesday interview with Adnkronos International...

Meanwhile and despite all:

Death by stoning continues despite international outcry

Country's leaders appear incapable of stopping arcane practice as hard-line clerics and judges interpret Islamic law as they see fit

Let's hope the worlds attention has a positive influence for ALL women in that area. Are the authorities there now hoping that all this will be forgotten to allow a suspicious end in secrecy?

All eyes are on Iran... STILL

[Letters to Sakineh] Anyone and everyone can still help. As for what address to use? My first guess is "c/o" your country's Iranian embassy.

At least she's not dead yet...

Perhaps we should keep in mind Ah-Mad speaks not to a western audience but speaks for Muslim consumption.

If we listen to Ah-Mad with a western ear, never will we understand the true motives of Ah-Mad..

And this case takes another fraught turn for the worst:

Sakineh's Son Arrested: The Great Silence of Conformist Thinkers

Sajjad, the son of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, was arrested three days ago in the office of her attorney, Houtan Khian, who was detained as well -- and scarcely anyone is talking about it.

That day, the young ticket-taker on the buses of Tabriz who courageously defended his mother, incessantly pleading her cause before global public opinion, was in the middle of what may well prove his last interview, with a German magazine, when he was brutally reduced to silence -- and hardly anyone seems to care. ...

We can write to presidents, prime ministers, and foreign affairs ministers of our respective countries (as well as the commissioners in charge of European diplomacy or to the Secretary General of the United Nations) to implore them to intervene.

As Mina Ahadi and the International Committee Against Stoning in London and Berlin suggest, we can address letters of protest to the Iranian judicial authorities (Head of the Judiciary, Howzeh Riyasat-e Qoveh Qaaiyeh, Pasteurt Sont., Vali Asr Ave., south of Serah-e Jomhouri, Tehran, 131 681 47 37, Iran).

We can and we should find all means, even the most humble...

One single thing would be unthinkable: to remain inactive, voiceless, in the face of this insane escalation.

A world in which we resign ourselves to the idea of justice governed by this ancient, scarcely updated form of collective guilt, filial guilt, would be one devoid of hope.

Now, it turns even more nasty:

Son and lawyer of condemned woman tortured in Iran

... Sajjad, the son of Sakineh and Houtan Kian, her lawyer, are subjected to pressure and severe torture in a prison of Tabriz,' the statement said. ...

So where is the international outcry?

Has Iran sucessfully procrastinated long enough for Sakineh and her family to be forgotten?

This, unfortunately, is all very real and all very cynical of those in power in Iran:

Ashtiani stoning reports troubling

Canada is "deeply troubled" by reports that Iranian Sakineh Ashtiani could be executed as early as Wednesday, Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon said.

SOS Sakineh

This Tuesday, November 2nd, the news came through the Iranian networks and then the international press agencies: the execution of Sakineh could be carried out in short time.

Is the Timing Any Accident?

The Iranian Islamic government is about to execute Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani in Teheran for the crime of committing “adultery” (which presumably occurred after her husband’s death). She was also charged for allegedly conspiring in the death of her husband.

Sakineh’s death is set for tomorrow, November 3. After torturing her for four long years, including lashing her 99 times in the presence of her 17-year-old son, Sakineh’s death is now set for a time when Americans will be totally occupied with our own midterm elections.

The story of her legal ordeal is as byzantine and treacherous as that of Alfred Dreyfus who was falsely accused of treason...

... The anti-Islamist Muslim and ex-Muslim feminists are marching. The American government under President Obama is doing nothing. ...

So what is to be done?

What can be done?

Let's hope still that the worlds attention has a positive influence for ALL women in that area. Are the authorities there now hoping that all this will be forgotten to allow a suspicious end in secrecy?

Avaaz: 24 Hours to Save Sakineh

Perhaps a difference was made, both by the politicians and by people in general:

Iran stays execution of woman convicted of adultery following global outcry

04 November 2010

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, an Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning for allegedly having committed adultery, escaped her execution on Wednesday after strong international protests, but still faces the death penalty. ...

"The general feeling is that if we do not manage to get Sakineh released, the regime is probably going to execute her...

Malek Ajdar Sharifi, the head of the justice department in East Azarbaijan province, where Sakineh Ashtiani is imprisoned, insisted that her case was still under review...

Mohammed Mostafaei, Ashtiani's lawyer until he was forced to flee Iran in late July, said that Iranian judicial sources had assured him that her execution was not imminent. The woman’s son, Sajjad Ghaderzadeh, and her lawyer in Tabriz, Javid Houtan Kian, have been imprisoned by Iran for publicizing Ashtiani's case abroad.

Nordic countries make joint appeal over Iran execution

Five Nordic countries issued a joint appeal to Iran Thursday, calling on the Islamic republic to commute the sentence against a woman condemned to death for adultery.

"We have closely followed the case of Ms. (Sakineh) Mohammadi-Ashtiani who was at risk of execution by stoning for adultery and may now be executed by hanging," said the statement from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

"Both sentences are clearly unacceptable. We state our strong opposition to the death penalty under all circumstances," it added...

Fears earlier this week that Iran was about to execute Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani provoked an international outcry, with Britain and France among the countries calling on Iran to call it off...

Avaaz were very quick to respond, and afterwards posted:

It's Thursday, and Sakineh is still alive. A staggering 500,000 of us contacted leaders in one day -- and they're instantly making calls to Iran! Our pressure is working, but we need to ramp it up to keep her alive...

http://www.avaaz.org/en/24h_to_save_sakineh/?vl

Sakineh's adultery case is a tragic sham stacked with human rights violations. First, she was to be stoned to death. But the Iranian government had to revoke the sentence after her children generated a worldwide outcry against the farcical trial -- she could not speak the language used in court, and the alleged incidents of adultery took place after her husband's death.

Then her lawyer was forced into exile, and the prosecution conjured up a new trumped-up charge for which she would be executed...

Since then the regime has arrested two German journalists, her lawyer and her son, who has bravely led the international campaign to save his mother. All remain in prison and Sakineh's son and lawyer have been also tortured and have no access to lawyers...

The Iranian press note the pressure and concern:

No country dares to inspect Iranian ships: official

... Elsewhere in his remarks, Mehmanparast pointed to Sakineh Ashtiani, saying her dossier has turned into a human rights issue in the West.
...

Iran refutes propaganda about Ashtiani

...Sharifi added that the hostile Western media campaign regarding the case aims to invent poisonous propaganda against the Islamic Republic of Iran rather than sticking to their main duty of objectively disseminating information.

The Iranian judiciary official also emphasized that Ashtiani's case remains under a judicial review.

His remarks came as Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said in Georgia's capital city of Tbilisi on Wednesday that no final decision has been made with regard to Ashtiani's case. ...

According to the Iranian spokesperson, Ashtiani's case is clearly a scenario written by the West to exert pressure on the Islamic Republic.

Unfortunately, this appears to be turning into a 'soap opera'... However, for the people involved, it is all very real.

So, how to move for a good way out for all concerned?

The harrowing story continues:

Tehran regime starts to split over Ashtiani death by stoning verdict

A conservative newspaper in Iran has challenged the sentence of death by stoning passed on Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani in the first public sign that her case is causing divisions within the regime.

The article in Alef, headlined “The Gap Between the Legal Procedures and Sharia”, says that the judge who sentenced Ms Ashtiani for her alleged adultery had an inadequate knowledge of Sharia...

Sakineh, Ahmadinejad, and the "Insolents"

And so Iran is backing down. The Islamic Republic does it in its own way, tortuously, but it is backing down. And that is what is evident in two stands made public this morning, after the new stay of execution accorded Sakineh under the pressure of public opinion and of the chancelleries.

The first comes from the Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Manouchehr Mottaki, telling his French counterpart Bernard Kouchner that "the authorities of justice had not pronounced the final verdict in the affair concerning Sakineh Ashtiani" -- a discreet, to say the least, way of making one (temporarily) forget the letter addressed by the Supreme Court of Tehran to the application of sentences office of Tabriz prison instructing that the young woman be executed as rapidly as possible. ...

There must be increasingly more citizens--signing, for example, the petition of La Règle du Jeu - who express their solidarity with the young woman unjustly condemned and, of course, with her son, Sajjad.

Let's not give in.

Let's continue to be "insolent".

All eyes are on Iran STILL!

It's ALL our world,

Martin

[Letters to Sakineh] Anyone and everyone can still help. As for what address to use? My first guess is "c/o" your country's Iranian embassy. And/or use the addresses offered above.

Two examples of how arbitrary boarders can leave people worlds apart:

Topless Ukraine feminists protest Iranian woman's death sentence

Kiev: A group of female protesters went topless in Ukraine on Thursday at an event promoting Iranian culture, to demonstrate against the death sentence handed down to a woman in Iran...

Tory councillor arrested over stoning tweet

A Conservative local politician has been arrested after he called for a female Muslim journalist to be stoned to death, a police source said on Thursday.

Birmingham councillor Gareth Compton was also suspended from the Conservative Party for saying Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, a columnist for the Independent and Evening Standard, should be stoned. ...

Compton, in later Twitter messages, apologised for his remark, saying it had been an "ill-conceived attempt at humour." ...

At least she's still alive for the moment, but still the centre of whatever political games...

Avaaz is looking for a way out of the game, in whatever way possible. I hope they can succeed for where the Church, Politics, and religion has failed:

Save Sakineh

That second petition is now well on the way to having been signed by a million people;

And:

Now is the time to save Sakineh for good

Sakineh is still alive! We stopped her stoning sentence, postponed an attempt to hang her quietly and let the Iranian government know that the world is watching and outraged. Now is the time to save Sakineh for good.

Last week over 900,000 of us sent messages and made calls to key government officials. But now we're at an impasse and have to give Iran a way out of this dilemma. The next step towards freeing Sakineh is to fund international experts to strengthen her legal defense and work with officials in Iran to resolve this shameful situation. If thousands of us donate in the next three days we can hire an elite team of advocates, keep campaigning to free Sakineh and work on behalf of others facing brutal injustice.

Iran has tried everything to keep Sakineh in jail. They accused her of adultery and sentenced her to stoning despite the fact that the alleged adultery took place after her husband’s death. They sentenced her to death for the murder of her husband even though she had already been acquitted, and another man convicted and sentenced for the murder. They even arrested her son and lawyer and forced the rest of the legal team into exile. After massive international pressure, Iranian officials must be desperate for a face-saving way out of this mess...

Rome pleads for life of condemned woman

... The banner, which features a large photo of the condemned woman above the slogan “Let us save Asia Bibi,” first appeared on Nov. 15.

It is the latest in a series of recent appeals by the City of Rome to spare the lives of prisoners, including Iranian woman Sakineh, Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit and former Iraqi foreign minister Tariq Aziz.

Two years ago, City Hall erected a similar banner calling for the release of Myanmar democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi, who was finally freed on 14 Nov. ...

Iran charges two German journalists with spying over Ashtiani case

Pair 'confess' on state TV after interviewing son of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, the woman sentenced to death by stoning

Iran’s political tensions may be playing out in legal system

... Sotoudeh’s court case, which is expected to take several weeks, was held behind closed doors. Lawyers and family members were told not to discuss its details with foreign media.

In a separate development yesterday, Iranian state television broadcast a purported statement by an Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning for adultery in which she calls herself a “sinner.’’

The stoning sentence against the 43-year-old Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani has been put on hold and is now being reviewed by Iran’s supreme court.

The case has raised an international outcry, embarrassing Tehran.

The face of the woman identified as Ashtiani was blurred and her words were voiced over in what the TV report said was a translation into Farsi from Azeri Turkish, which is spoken in parts of Iran.

In recent months, at least 10 lawyers have been sentenced to prison terms or are awaiting trail. ...

The story continues:

Iran must end the 'Serial arrests' of lawyers, says Amnesty

Maryam Kiyan Ersi, Maryam Karbasi and Sara Sabaghian were detained on Saturday upon returning from Turkey, and now face security charges and charges of ‘violating moral standards outside Iran.’

Sara Sabaghian is believed to have been the last remaining free lawyer of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, a woman whose stoning sentence for adultery is currently under review by Iran’s Supreme Court...

Global outrage delays hanging of innocent woman in Iran as world watches

Petitioners seek release of Mohammadi Ashtiani, who has been wrongfully accused of adultery...

There have been petitions around the Internet asking the Iranian government to free Sakineh, and one in particular has been signed by over 400,000 people, including Salman Rushdie, Arianna Huffington, Hugh Jackman, and Yoko Ono.

Mohammadi Ashtiani's execution date has been delayed time and time again due to the noble efforts of protestors around the world, but merely delaying her execution is not enough. This execution must be halted completely, if Iran is to retain any semblance of credibility regarding women's rights. She and her son should be pardoned, and the government should issue a formal apology for their actions.

There is still a glimmer of hope that she will be freed; the Iranian government has already delayed her execution due to protests, and she has not been declared dead yet, so one can only hope that she is alive. All that needs to happen is for those voices to get louder rather than become complacent...
