I am running a CPDN task with a December 2011 deadline. I am getting credits via the trickle mechanism. No GPU, they don't care for speed, only for the quality of data. Nobody complains. Tullio |

with 40-50 active projects out there its pretty easy to find something you like In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

Shutting down (finishing first) from CPDN. Too many bugs in the software, bad enough that my anti-exploit software kicks out the "famous" work units... and graphics all out crash in their scripts. As far as other boinc projects: I think everyone is aware. And if they want to they should certainly know by now where to find them. Fact is, some people want to do their best for SETI. There is a line somewhere between questioning what is going on, expressing dis-satisfaction and "whinning". Does the line get crossed? Certainly. It can get just as self involved and egocentric as those that are jeerleading, telling them to just go away. Honestly.. I see more real whinning by those with a "my seti right or wrong" attitude. But neither is immune. Bulletin boards inherently have differences in perspectives and opinions, and that will be obvious in all but the most heavily moderated and censored places. If adverse opinions truely bother you, there is no requirement to read them. Simply avoiding the "number crunching" section should reduce it dramatically. People will continue to take pride in how much they have done for SETI, as they may for any individual project. It is difficult to obtain that same satisfaction for how much they have done for "any random boinc project". Some one person might care about, some they may not. And some they will absolutely want no part in. And they will come and go accordingly. Janice |

I've been thinking.... how about "Scarecrow@Home?" Not for the already power-crunchers. The project is a non-project. No servers, no workunits, no nothing. The point is for you to figure out how much money it would take to build a monster machine and be the top user. Then send that amount to Scarecrow for the continued development of great ideas just like this one. Call now, operators are standing by! |

Pasi, what you are talking about sounds very much like all the on-line games my kids play. Lots of points that mean nothing, lots of trash talking, and a chance to blow up people who don't agree with you. Give that a try. Every other BOINC project I'm part of has very polite Forums, where people talk about the project, and hardly ever get uncivil. All very boring. World Community Grid offers a range of medical research projects and other projects, all of which can give you a "I'm doing something good" feeling. Credits aren't bad. The hardware and daily operations are funded largely by IBM, so up time is nearly 100 %. Also, good user-friendly explanations of what the projects are doing. MilkyWay is doing some seriously interesting research on the history of the Galactic collision we are in the middle of right now. Lots of credits, you can use a GPU, but has intermittent work availability and server crashes. (where have I heard that before?) CPDN works fine on my hardware. I have had problems with the screen saver graphics hanging, but the crunching seems to continue. I don't use a screen saver, cuts in to my precious RAC. |

Well, over at BillW@home our users are theoretically building even BIGGER imaginary machines than those wimps at scarecrow@home. All we need is more money! Just send money, and I'll send you all the RAC you want! Special, this week only - DOUBLE RAC!!! Offer void where prohibited by law. |

am afraid no less than half a century of continuous rumbling would count. Well then, I have a few relatives that have earned it. |

Well I did it.. I signed up for that new project mentioned earlier. Got my new signature and all! Yeah, I got fed up. The virtual servers kept having virtual crashes. The whole non-project was perceived down more than it was imagined up. So I went where I would be appreciated. |

After posting numerous flames towards the admins and devs, I suppose. LOL. Of course... that sys admin at Scarecrow@home is a real hose bag. Couldn't program a VCR much less a computer. |

Um, sorry Scarecrow. Your check bounced. We are taking back all your points. All complaints to the sys admin should be sent to theboss@/dev/null |

Um, sorry Scarecrow. Ooospsie! And talk about your synchronicities....what are the odds of your sys admin and my sys admin both having the same e-mail address?! |

I take it the mods stepped on you for that one, eh? Turns out all the Scarecrow@home mods were on BillW's payroll. Crooked as a dog's hind leg. |
