I had given up on Seti when it became Boinc, I didn't run for a couple years but after getting emails from Eric I decided to come back. I feel I was invited back and do deserve a liitle info now and then as to what is happening and changes they are planning. I believe if asked to come back that is not the same as just Volenteering, I came back because he made me feel he needed my help! Now I need his so I can understand what is going on. I got never an invitation. I'm a volunteer member. ;-) To Eric and his family happened something very sad, so I guess he will be away some days for to be with his family. This is very understandable. Cafe SETI : 'For Angela K.' |

I joined up with BOINC shortly after it started, but never posted in the boards. I think even though I was crunching SETI on BOINC, I still got that invite email as well. Eric and Angela aren't around this weekend, so you'll be waiting till at least Tuesday, as the project is the least of his concern with having to deal with what they are going through right now. |

Sorry, I don't see anything that give you more right to gripe or be more deserving of explanation. People leave and come back all the time. A quarter million email get sent out yearly to dormant accounts. So, you came back and it is appreciated but that doesn't make you special. It doesn't include any extra privileges than does who had the intestinal fortitude to stick it out when Boinc was in its early development. Boinc V7.2.42 Win7 i5 3.33G 4GB, GTX470 |

By glancing at the numbers I would say Hiamps has roughly 1000 times as much right to ask questions than you do to question him. Janice |

Lets just settle down before it turns into a flame war. Why are we attacking each other because of an outage? Everyone stop trying to maintain your ego and focus on the task at hand. It's sad to see you upset hiamps, hopefully things get worked out so you can stay here. As for Aurora being able to question people, numbers don't mean a thing... if everyone looked at numbers here we'd all be judging who is the better person off pure speculation. Why base anything we do around here around how large our e-penis (credit and RAC) are. I'm not attacking anyone here, but everyone has a right to their own opinion, whether that questions the opinion of hiamps or even Dr. A. numbers shouldn't matter and shouldn't change the ability to tell everyone your opinion. - Jarryd |

I think that "deserving" information tends to be too strong and emotive, but am sure we all of us would gratefully appreciate a little more news and warnings than was often forthcoming at times during problems including outages. We always expect far more than will be given, but it has been pretty good recently, even when other priorities have had to be covered. And as for losing sleep or having argument about RAC, everyone must by now realize that there is only a vestige of "average" involved there after the RAC "sexing up" exercise which leaves it wildly fluctuating at the mercies of variations in Pending tasks, outages and other anomalies. A true average is somewhat "boring" but does at least have an understandable meaning and is an excellent warning when a problem starts to appear. Keith |

Funny thing is....I still wish Seti would be on it's own and not part of Boinc. I had signed on to look for Seti not just run whatever David Anderson decided he liked....But sometimes you can't have the good without the bad.... Official Abuser of Boinc Buttons... Funny thing is....I still wish Seti would be on it's own and not part of Boinc. I had signed on to look for Seti not just run whatever David Anderson decided he liked....But sometimes you can't have the good without the bad.... I have quit several times since 1999, mostly because I needed the computer power for "real" stuff. I keep coming back because, when I can, I like to be part of a bigger project than most of us ever get the chance to. The last time I came back (in 2008) was because of an e-mail reminder from WCG. For me, BOINC opened up my eyes to other really neat stuff (like MilkyWay) and important stuff (like WCG) where I can be a part of the action, and help in some small way. Each project has its ups and downs (except maybe WCG, which appears to be bankrolled by IBM), but I have to shake my head at the people here who seem to take it all so seriously. What did you all expect when you signed up? Did you have a RAC per dollar target? Did you have a drop-dead date for finding ET? For those of you who read the very calm forums at WCG, can you picture anybody there leaving in a huff because the Dengue fever project shut down for a few months, and they're not interested in curing cancer? I'm just glad to be here when I can, and doing what I can. And BOINC helps fill in the gaps. |

I was part of SETI@home since 2005. I only stopped because my PC at the time was too old and was not completing WUs in a manner that would be constructive to the project. During the period I was absent, I did receive several "invites" from the project to rejoin SETI@home. Up until recently, I just did not have the time, resources or equipment to continue with the project. I came back because I love the project and I love the "science" behind it. I think this is a brilliant idea and I really do believe that we are participating in a good program. My view is simple: There are not enough scientists or researchers available in the world to monitor the skies for a possible ET signal. I think this is one of the best ways to go about finding the signal(s). I just hope in the long run, our research and crunching pays off. Despite complaints that we have not found that ET signal yet, we have to be realistic. Taking all the sand in the entire world, we are but a single grain (when comparing our location to possible other locations of ET worlds). We are very far, at least from our beliefs, from any known possible solar system that 'could' hold intelligent life. So to say that after 10 years or 5 years of crunching and not finding anything is pointless is just ridiculous. Some people need to understand that space is never ending and for us to find that ET signal in that short amount of time is almost impossible. Sop keep crunching guys! If we don't find it, lets hope someone or something does (assuming there is other intelligent life out there which I believe there is). I had seven or eight machines running, down from a high of eleven, until late August of 2005, when something happened that made me abandon the project. Did I mention I'm in the New Orleans area? I just came back in January of 2010. |

How many have quit because they got ticked off, only to come back because they realized it was pointless to quit? I stand accused....LOL. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |
