From what little I understand.. they have more problems at the moment than Oscar can solve.

Still waiting on the lab to figure out how deep the rabbit hole goes.

If 5000 participants each donated $100 the project would have enough money to really consider possible expansion rather than just minimal maintenance. Or 50000 participants (less than a third of active participants) donating the minimum $10 would do the same.

Could we get some kind of counter on the site showing how many people have donated so far, and how far along they are to a certain goal? I'm sure as we get closer to meeting the goal, more people would be inspired/willing to donate (perhaps due to some sense of competition... try to be the one to push it past the goal line). Right now it's like we're donating blind, no idea where the money is going, how much they have, how much they need, etc.

The SETI@home Donation History Since 1 Oct 2008 page has good information, and the SETI@home Budget - Fall 2008 shows how they planned to spend the amount they were asking users to contribute. So they asked for $548200.00 for one year and have gotten $224420.82 in the two years since. You can go down the list of items on the budget and figure out what has been dropped or deferred. I'll note that some hardware donations by Intel and Overland Storage should also be considered.

Maybe somebody can explain why these sentences "SETI@home is a nonprofit educational and research organization that relies heavily on donations to continue its work. We are deeply grateful to all the individuals and organizations that have donated to SETI@home." are buried on the Sponsor page and not shown prominently on the Home page.

To me a bit more about donating $10.00 or more to the project on the Home page where new crunchers could see it might help with increasing donations.

I'm sad and a little annoyed ...

While I was trying to make an online credit card donation I encountered the following problem on step 4 gift receipt :

There was a problem that occured while processing your credit card.
    For further information, please contact:
    UC Berkeley Gift Administration
    Phone: 510.643.9789
    E-mail: gahelp@berkeley.edu

After I contacted my bank, I learned that the transaction was successful and that the amount of 7.18€(10$) were forwarded to the UC BERKELEY FOUNDATION U.S.
I have already sent the mail, but I wanted you guys to ask if anyone encountered this problem before and maybe have a suggestion.

Message 1041677 - Posted: 13 Oct 2010, 9:57:30 UTC - in response to Message 1041654.

I did not occurred this error. I am in Europe too.

If this is helping you: I have a similar "UC BERKELEY FOUNDATION <some transaction code here> USA" as result from my bank, after paying using CC with no error message.

So that I think it's on right direction if your bank said money was released to "UC BERKELEY FOUNDATION" as the account of B.F.

My suggestion is just to wait a while for the money to be effectively on B.F. hand (after this I am sure B.F. will confirm your donation).
In my case this took some time (about 5 days), I think because of interbank transfer from EU/€ to USA/$.

I am not sure, but in my opinion the credit card error message may be anything, since an error code was not returned; looks for me more closed to an wrong error message (for example, regarding a timeout for confirmation of operation, not regarding a failure of operation itself), since the bank said transaction was successful.

May this will help you a little.

Everything's fine... I just received a word :-)

Thank you for your e-mail and your on-line gift. Your gift to SETI@Home did go through correctly. There have been some problems with our website for the last day or two with donors receiving error messages when the gifts have gone through correctly. I did confirm that your gift was processed correctly and generated an e-mail receipt which you should have received a short while ago

Now I can visit Mark's thread!

Anyone know if tax-efficient donations can be made to SETI from UK? Like Gift Aid or Deed of Covenant. Seems a shame not to make use of this additional money. Roger

I just want all of those that have donated to know that many of us who have not, do appreciate your gifts. Personally, I am unable to help in that respect. My computer is assembled from junk computers that I have pieced together. Otherwise, I would be unable to participate in the program. I may not live long enough to see the discovery of another civilization ( 74 years old) , but I do believe they are out there!

Thanks again to each and every one of you.

Well I do not have any credit card, I refuse using credit cards, having the perhaps unusual philosophy in todays society, that if I do not have the money to buy things, then maybe I shouldn't buy them at all.

My VISA card is a debit card, but as I said, I refuse to give out my card details online. Logging in to my bank though, I can easily transfer money to my PayPal account, but since SETI doesn't accept PayPal payment, then they obviously does not want my money.

PayPal will give you a temporary card number that you can use to make a donation. The funds are drawn from your PayPal balance and there is no actual card to have to worry about. Your arguments for not donating are weak. I've never donated anything more than CPU time myself but I've also never claimed it was SETI's fault that I don't donate. If you don't want to or can't then don't. It's pretty simple really.

I was inspired... it's not much but it's another drop in the bucket.

Thank you for your gift of $20.00 via Visa on 11/11/2010.
Your gift was assigned to the following areas:

SETI@home - $20.00

This argument is not valid.

I also refuse to use my ATM card on the internet for any purpose but I will use my credit card and then pay off the ballance when the bill comes. No problem and no interest charges.

Sometimes I think back...

Where we have been and where we are now. The one thing that strikes me most improtantly can be viewed at SETI@home Arthur C Clarke tribute page.

One person helped to support the "ideals" that Seti was founded on. The Seti Users summed up many things about his feelings, their feelings and where we are now.

At this point it is up to the Seti Users to spread the word, and do what they can. Each of you can make a difference.
