I have two machines, each with approx. 200 downloads that do not go through. They go to "Retry" almost immediately. I CAN upload OK. This asymmetrical situation has been going on for a couple of days. Otherwise, my Net connection seems OK. I am using 6.10.18, and have never had anything like this happen before. Is anyone else experiencing similar problems? (I am on the East Coast - Newton, MA - if that makes any difference). |

I believe I read something about one of the two download servers are not responding properly on the internet. That was before today's maintenance though, so maybe it is fixed by now. Linux laptop: record uptime: 1511d 20h 19m (ended due to the power brick giving-up) |

Just to make sure, you have tried a reboot of your computers haven't you? This sometimes frees stuck up and downloads. PROUD MEMBER OF Team Starfire World BOINC |

I noticed this over on the tech news forum.. The DL server http://208.68.240.18 is not available.Sometimes a reboot will cause the computer in question to pick the other server and downloads will complete. If not, there is a trick that can be done by altering your hosts file. I'm not sure exactly how so I will leave it to someone else to explain that. PROUD MEMBER OF Team Starfire World BOINC |

The .18 DL server is still not available. I need to do the hosts trick* for successful DL. You could upgrade to BOINC V6.10.56, this version should find the other DL server. If you would like to stay with V6.10.18 then you need to do the hosts trick* for successful DL. [* make a forum search.. ;-)] |

BTW. Current you should insert this in the hosts file.. Because the .13 DL server is available. 208.68.240.13 boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu |

Thank you Sutaru, I remembered about upgrading to 6.10.56 after I posted but you beat me to posting about it. PROUD MEMBER OF Team Starfire World BOINC |

well, I patched my HOSTS file per recommendation, did an ipconfig /flushdns, then restarted BOINC. Still no downloads. AAAAArrrrggggghhhhh. |

Followup: On both machines, I modified the HOSTS file, then shut down BOINC, then did an "ipconfig /flushdns". On the XP64 machine, I had to reboot; when BOINC was restarted, all was ok - d/l worked. On my Vista 64bit machine, I didn't have to reboot - restarting BOINC then restarted d/ls. Thank you all for your suggestions; when the .18 d/l server is back up, I guess I will remove the pointer to .13 from my HOSTS file. |

You are all welcome. :-) Just to remember.. BOINC V6.10.56 wouldn't need this hosts trick. If you don't want to upgrade and stay with V6.10.18 you need current only this entry in your hosts file: 208.68.240.13 boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu If http://208.68.240.18 is again available, you could delete it again or make a # in front of the upper mentioned address. You could insert both: # 208.68.240.13 boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu # 208.68.240.18 boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu ..and if one of the two DL server is again unavailable, delete the # in front of the server which is available. |

Tell me about the rabbits, George. IIRC, someone here told about how even though the Server status page has lots of WU ready for download (57,712 now), I and other people aren't able to d/l WU. I think it had to do with a queue which was smaller than the 57,000 available WU. Also, we've suffered through some rather impressive outages, which have nothing to do with the "normal" Tuesday (GMT) outage. At one time I tried to "bank" WU to be able to span the Tuesday outage, but BOINC really screws up Rosetta scheduling to the extent that I have almost missed due dates by processing later WU in preference to ones due sooner. So now, I've got NO backlog and NO SETI and I'll have 1 Ready to start (at most) for each project, and devil take the hindmost. Correction, I now have 1 SETI. |

Just noticed that I got 2 ghost tasks out of the 3 that are shown "In progress" on my account. I know that "ghosts" will eventually time out (on 19 July) but it is a nuisance to me and possibly to wingman to have to wait 7 weeks for these. |

Since you only have the three tasks, you might want to set no new tasks, finish the good one, then do a detach/ reattach. This should clear the ghosts and then you could allow new tasks to get going again. PROUD MEMBER OF Team Starfire World BOINC |
