'Synthetic life' breakthrough announced by scientists BBC News; http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science_and_environment/10132762.stm BBC News says; -------------------------------- Scientists in the US have succeeded in developing the first synthetic living cell. The researchers constructed a bacterium's "genetic software" and transplanted it into a host cell. The resulting microbe then looked and behaved like the species "dictated" by the synthetic DNA. The advance, published in Science, has been hailed as a scientific landmark, but critics say there are dangers posed by synthetic organisms. The team hopes eventually to design bacterial cells that will produce medicines and fuels and even absorb greenhouse gases. BBC News full story here. ------------------------------------- I spoke here before about this topic of mankind interfering with the genetic codes created by nature. I believe this is the most dangerous of all the technology that mankind has created. This is far more powerful than any chemical, biological or atomic weapon. This technology of mankind "creating" any type of life he can think of, has massive implications for the survival of all life on earth. Manufacturing synthetic life could create incredible beauty, but its far more likely to succeed in creating our worst nightmares. The only limit is the human imagination, and stuff we can't yet imagine. John. |

In my opinion, Craig Venter creating Synthetic life is one of the more profound breakthrough's in human history. This achievement has the ability to effect life on earth in ways you can't even imagine. There is a 1 hour TV program about Craig Venter creating Synthetic life uploaded to Youtube if you want to watch it; Creating Synthetic Life Part 1; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdGRITKYZTQ Creating Synthetic Life Part 2; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jfn4dMW10u0 Creating Synthetic Life Part 3; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTwZONKxkqM Creating Synthetic Life Part 4; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpEI6HFv0MI Creating Synthetic Life Part 5; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CwfxqP1U3E Creating Synthetic Life Part 6; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOddDPM6N1M John. |
