OK, I know some of you are SETI only, this is not meant to be another thread about the current network and server (and A/C) problems.

Like most of you I ran out of SETI tasks a few days ago. I do have some other projects that I run at various Resource Shares.

SIMAP and RALPH are both periodic projects, so I know these will often have no work. I have not seen LHC work for nearly 11 months, according to the forums there, there MAY be some work there in the coming months, but it is still unlikely. Orbit is another project that I have crunched for in the past, which is currently mostly dormant.

Malaria WUs really p*** me off because the run times are so random. Milkyway seems to only be interested in high powered crunchers. I occasionally run Rosetta, but I have usually been awarded about 20% of my claimed credits. Leiden is about the only project that I seem to get good results with.

I have excluded SETI Beta because it is usually down when SETI is. I am looking for a new project to crunch with reasonably short run times, moderate file sizes to upload and download, and preferably a ScreenSaver or Graphic app that works with current versions of BOINC.

Any suggestions please?

Just at the moment, AQUA would like some quick, short-term help with their Fokker_Planck tasks. They're multi-threaded, and run best on dual core machines with a recent development version of BOINC: v6.10.19 or later, not the otherwise recommended v6.10.18 - 'all versions' download v6.10.32 is fine.

For a backup project, approach with caution and disable their other 'AQUA' application as soon as possible through preferences: that one can tie up an entire quad for three days or more! (Though the way this outage is going, some people might welcome that).

I've never looked for any graphics, but the tasks certainly meet your specification of small download/upload file sizes, and the runtimes for FP - though variable - are currently less than standard SETI CPU tasks. And best of all, the Admins are friendly, approachable, active and responsive.

I tend to keep a couple of short CPDN tasks for Rainy days, but they have a quite large downloads and uploads, but have very long deadlines so i can just suspend it until needed.
Einstein's a favourite too, tasks are a bit longer than Seti_enhanced Wu's, but are again reasonable large downloads, uploads smallish through,
Collatz is very good for GPU's, especially ATI GPU's, CPU run times 12 to 24 hours depending on CPU and OS (32 or 64bit),
downloads and uploads are very small, but no Graphics.

Thanks Richard, I took a look at AQUA, I currently have a Malaria task that is struggling to meet it's deadline. I also managed to report my recent SETI work and got 9 tasks last night, one of which has been trying to upload for the last 2 hours.

...

I have now joined AQUA since I typed that first paragraph. Got 1 WU, and temporarily set NNT. Rogue Malaria task is currently 58% crunched after 47 hours, with a deadline of 17:51 UTC tomorrow!

Thanks, I have run CPDN and Einstein on my Athlon XP in the past, don't have those projects on this PC.

I will report in the next few days about how I find AQUA.

Well, at least you got the right sort of FP task. I'm currently pushing those through in about 50 minutes on an Athlon 64 X2 4200+ - be interesting to see how you get on: but with a 10-day deadline, you should be OK.

One thing I forgot to mention - AQUA can have a very, er, "creative" approach to task length estimation: that Athlon has gone from a DCF of 0.4 to 100 and back again in recent weeks! You'll find a Post-It note stuck to the message boards somewhere.... But at least progress is linear once they get started (after the first quick 1%) so you can judge what's going on.

Milkyway did extend out the deadline a bit to make it easier for CPU crunchers to continue, but GPU's are still the primary contributors.

On my iMac it is mostly just SETI, with Collatz as a backup project.

On the Quad, I have SETI and MW as primary and have Einstein and Collatz as backup.

The Dell is just SETI and Collatz only, also the DVR.

Ditto. I love that project. I just wish I had more crunching time for them.

I use Einstein@home as CPU backup project.
Its searches in some way close to SETI's ones so maybe they can found some "strange" signals in their data ;)
Also, proof for gravitational waves is interesting by itself.

Einstein was my first backup project - about a week after I switched from SETI Classic to BOINC, back in 2005! Nothing new about outages.

But it violates Keith's stipulation about small upload/download file sizes, as Claggy said. That's why I suggested AQUA - very small footprint.

Sorry, couldn't resist!

ABC, Aqua, Einstein, Enigma & QMC for me. Gotta stop aiming for large targets on S@H. Every time I go for one, seti crashes.....ooops....

Was trying for 1 mill in Feb, better reduce that to 750k & try for 1 mill in March..lol

I read somewhere that CPDN ignores the "official" deadlines you see in BOINC Manager. That, plus the very long completion times, makes this a very good back up. you could lose the Internet for months and still get credit eventually for your crunching.

If you are anywhere near an internet connection, you can get credit (sorry, dirty word) and scientific kudos as you go along - they use "trickles". But seafarers bereft of internet for months at a time have also crunched for CPDN, and their work is accepted too.

I like Primegrid and Yoyo. they have varying length WU's. Enough so that you can occupy your time looking for a prime

I am running a CPDN task with a deadline in December 2011, then AQUA, Einstein,QMC. I would run LHC if available.

SIMAP and RALPH are both periodic projects, so I know these will often have no work.

SIMAP will start the new work batches at every 1st in the month. The lenght of the batch depends, so some days till some weeks or month work are available.
