If I try to install BOINC 6.10.18 (64-bit) on SBS 2008, I get error message: "Failed to add user to the 'boinc_admins' group (Administrator)" and no BOINC is installed. Could you help me please? I think reason is: account Administrator is blocked by system. But I cannot unblock it. If I install BOINC version 5.8.16 (32 bit), there is no problem. But version 5.8.16 asks me for administrator name and password. And I think this is reason for no problem installation. |

The first rule for installing BOINC is to ensure that you have permission to run BOINC on the computer which you are installing it. One way to ensure this is to require Admin privileges upon installation. There is no way to install BOINC without requiring Admin permissions (and no one should be helping work around this to circumvent rule number 1). The reason why BOINC 6.x works is because it attempts to "sandbox" the program into it's own user account, and this version should not work on any version of Windows Server because this method is incompatible with domain controllers. The older version of BOINC, v5.x and older, did not sandbox the program and thus required Admin privs to install. Since v5.x did not sandbox, this version is still compatible with domain controllers (and thus is what I run on my three Windows Server machines). |

Version 5.10.45 has some improvements over 5.8.16 and is still compatible with domain controllers. You can find it here. Gruß, Gundolf Computer sind nicht alles im Leben. (Kleiner Scherz) ![]() SETI@home classic workunits 3,758 SETI@home classic CPU time 66,520 hours |

The reason it's happening is because you're running a domain controller and there are no local users or groups on a domain controller, other than the administrator account. Hence BOINC is unable to add your account to boinc_admins or other local BOINC groups. ![]() |
