Since there is no network link capable of delivering WUs from Arecibo, (but hopefully the Allan array might have one) and the prospect of failing drives, is a move to SSD swapping between Arecibo and the splitters feeding out the data to the WU servers in the near future? What if Fiction was Fact and Fact was Fiction and vice versa? |

Pointless, no need... The HDDs that are failing are those in their BIG storage box live in the rack. They have so many drives in there that you can expect a steady stream of fails because of the sheer numbers. Hence why raid is used. However, one hiccup they have on another 'Frankenstein' machine they have is that they can't always boot up from the raid on that machine... HDDs at the moment are much cheaper and have a much higher capacity than SSDs. The HDDs are also reasonably robust when powered down and the heads are parked. Ideal for transporting lots of data. Another problem they've had is with wearing out the docking connector on their drive enclosure at Arecibo... Roll on WiFi connectivity for removable drives? I know people think the Allen telescope will be a data source for SETI@Home, but unfortunately, it is operated by and for a totally unrelated project, and in a sense, they are in competition with SERENDIP, which feeds SETI@Home. Solid State Drives are EXPENSIVE and relatively small. During shipment, the drives could potentially be damaged by shock (but they're very well padded), but all of the other wear factors are absent. ... and they really need capacity, lots of capacity. |
