What a welcome change in version 6.10.14 for Mac. Thanks for the View menu Mac style (also complete with shortcuts). I always hated extra menus in the open window. Made me feel Apple OSX guidelines were being ignored. Just need to remove the options cluttering up the open window. Then I (and other Mac Users) will really feel "at home" in SETI/BOINC. Keith [P.S. Except that the News option does not yet seem to be active. Probably still work in progress?] |

What a welcome change in version 6.10.14 for Mac. If you have a News tab then someone erred in doing the compile. That menu was removed and put the back burner for a while and shouldn't be part of any current versions. |

[P.S. Except that the News option does not yet seem to be active. Probably still work in progress?] Thanks for explanation, AB Yes. That explains it. The News option has been omitted in the unwanted tabs in the active window which are contrary to Apple guidelines, but has accidentally been included (but inactive) in the correct Mac menu in the updated compilation. Will News be available as a direct link in the next update from the menu, do you know? It would be handy. Keith |

It would be marvellous if the "Commands" tabs and the "Web Sites" tabs could also be incorporated in the Main menu to further abide by Apple Guidelines. They could easily be included as pull-down sub menus under 2 of the present menu headings. Then all tabs along top and left hand side can be removed to make maximum advantage of the open window for viewing the contents. i know there are many other more pressing needs, but that would be a vast improvement and not too onerous a task. If you are wanting to make a request the easiest way is to get in touch with the BOINC dev team. Posting it here gets things read by a few general enthusiasts. Its unlikely the Devs would be hanging out here In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

I also notice that they have used the same shortcut for Statistics and also for Simple View!!! They've changed that one already - it'll be 'V' for Simple View next time. ([trac]changeset:19369[/trac]} |

It would be marvellous if the "Commands" tabs and the "Web Sites" tabs could also be incorporated in the Main menu to further abide by Apple Guidelines. I wonder if it's possible to meet Windows guidelines and Apple guidelines and whatever passes for guidelines in the *nix world? Seems that they'd have to produce three totally different user interfaces (with three sets of documentation) or one cross-platform set and live with complaints from someone. I'm not advocating any position, I'm just saying.... |

I really like the Macs, but I'm surprised that they have survived as long as they have -- it's like a niche thing I guess. I wonder how many iMacs Apple would sell if they came bundled with Win7. It would be interesting to see iPod sales based on the platform the user has i.e, are most sales to Mac owners? |

I really like the Macs, but I'm surprised that they have survived as long as they have ... For contrast, I'm surprised that Windows has survived as long as it has despite the farcical and very costly viral/malware load and product lock-in tricks... Could be it is a sheep-mentality thing? Meanwhile, I guess that Linux and BSD have done well to survive! Cheers, Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

I am running OpenSolaris as a Virtual Machine on top of SUN VirtualBox on my SuSE Linux 11.1. But while Linux has 5 projects running on my box, the only BOINC project running on Solaris is SETI by Dotsch.I gave the Virtual Machine 1 CPU, I GB Ram (out of 5, which my Linux sees all although it is a 32 bit) and 16 GB of my 160 GB disk. Now I am comparing times with those under Linux and shall decide if it is worthwhile to continue. But Solaris is a very professional OS, deriving from Berkeley UNIX. Tullio |

I really like the Macs, but I'm surprised that they have survived as long as they have ... On the virus question, the assumption is that Windows has a lot of viruses because it is Windows, and not because it is popular. If Windows had a 10% market share (or less) then it wouldn't be as good a target. |

I really like the Macs, but I'm surprised that they have survived as long as they have ... I don't know about others, but for me, OS X made things far better. It's not perfect but if I find a problem, I can report it and odds are it will be fixed in the next software release. My system is a tool and not a hobby or play thing. When I use it, I just want it to work. I have better things to do than work on my tools. |

Without rising to a ritual "taking sides" in a Mac/Windows feud, I was just pleased that SETI version of BOINC Manager 6.10.14 was taking advantage of the neater and more efficient layout provided by OSX. As most Mac programmers do stick to the Apple guidelines, this makes the use of the Mac very intuitive when starting to use a newly acquired application. A particularly nice touch is the use of one menu at top of the screen which varies according to which window is open. This contrasts to the menus show by tabs at top and left of most Windows active windows, which considerably restrict the space remaining for information. (And that is particularly apparent in the width of the Tasks page in BOINC Manager with tabs at left hand side of the window. My reason for making my original comment was to point out how glad I was that BOINC Manager was partly taking advantage of the usual Mac OSX practice, rather than copying the Windows style (even though at present they show the View options in the menu, but have not as yet removed the tabs from the active window). I really like the Macs, but I'm surprised that they have survived as long as they have ... This whole "Macs don't get viruses or spyware" is crap. I read a news article a few weeks ago stating that if Apple's market share was as large as Microsoft's, OS X would be more virus-prone than Windows is today. And don't forget the guy at DEFCON who hacked a Mac in 60 seconds... LOL. But then again, I'm PC all the way. Can't stand APPL, Steve Jobs or anything tied to them!!! It's just me and my opinion... - My 2 cents. - Luke. |

I don't like cats. But that has nothing to do with this thread either. Keith |

This whole "Macs don't get viruses or spyware" is crap... I run Linux systems. I don't run any antivirus. Not suffered any malware either. If my Linux system isn't running any network services, no need to run a firewall either. The Microsoft systems I help with all must run the extra burden of antivirus, anti-malware, registry cleaners, defraggers, and firewalls, and they still get knobbled far far too frequently for comfort. Almost guaranteed! Complete waste of time. The latest Mac advertisement alludes to part of that: New Mac Ad Attacks Entire Windows Lineage Aside: Note that my personal view is that Apple appears to be even more restrictive and anti-competitive than even Microsoft. However, a big difference is that at least the internet is not polluted by anyone/anything else in the way that Microsoft compromised systems swamp the internet with an ever increasing tide of viruses and malware... Computers and software should just simply work, reliably, usefully, helpfully. Further comment onto: "Microsoft hatred is a disease."
