And I apologize to the rest of you, but I must bring this topic to the forefront again.

I just had a look at the Top Users page.....

And I see only two freakin' stars in the lot.

What's up with that? You would think that the best heeled of us, with the jack to front the fastest computers in the world on the project, would also have the jing to donate a little?

Christ......it only takes like 10 bucks to get the star next to your name lit up........
We are the top 20 users in the world on this project.....a little pride might be in order.

Get with it, fellow crunchers, get with it.

And before I get the landslide of crap that will come from making this statement.......

No......I do not belittle anybody who does not feel that they cannot afford to give more than their computing power to the project.......

But I am addressing the top echelon........those who obviously can afford it.

The top echelon are using hydro to run their gear which is probably more than your salary -- don't you feel that they are doing enough? And, a lot of folks, *me included*, give anonymous donations. Just because there is no star after a name does not mean that they have not donated anything. The one's that give the most usually do it without being in the limelight. I don't want the star after my name so I don't get approached by every nit-wit special interest group that does troll the SETI Donor list...

Anyway, it's a great subject Kittyman for a flame-fest! Nascar doesn't start for another 1 1/2 hours :-)

Don't be shy........be proud of a star.

Be proud.

I see your point about being anonymous.........but WHY?
I have never had anybody seek me out for donations because I was listed here.

And if they did......the 'delete' button works just fine.

Don't skirt the issue..........please.

We need the stars lit up........

JMHO........

Of course, you may disagree.
But the force is strong with this opinion.

I don't know why but I hate to be known when I give money out. When I give money to PBS, I even refuse the gift. I hate being the center of attention and have never had a birthday party to my wife's disdain.

When I was a kid, one of my favorite shows was The Millionaire.

Maybe I need a bit of help with this...

I have to strongly agree with Mark on this subject.

If one has the means to get into the top 100 participants then they undoubtedly have the means to donate $10.00 per year (preferably more) for the Berkeley Servers. Without the servers and staff at Berkeley how long do you think this project will last?

edit - I have never been approached because of displaying the star.

I get the feeling that I'm outnumbered here so i'll turn on the star since you fellas are not getting harassed by being on the Donor List.

About donations -- does SETI not get a major portion of their operating expenses from UC and state governments?

Gawd.....we wish.

Seti is an abandoned project. As I understand it, Boinc the parent, still has funding. But Seti does not.

Their government funding ran out long ago, and they cannot apply for more.

So they run on a shoestring.

Don't know how Eric and Matt get money to eat with.

So figure it out........

As for UCB they take a percentage of the donations for administration purposes. Seti doesn't get much of a free ride except for the hardware donations and that is usually old Beta test systems.

The "Boogity Boogity" was a NASCAR reference to Nick's

The post was made at the exact time the flag dropped to start the race,
