... When you think about it, the amount of work being done per dollar (yen, euro, whatever) is dramatically low...

I think you mean that the amount of work per dollar is remarkably high??

At least, that's my perception.

F.

Yes. I was headed for "cost per unit is dramatically low" and that was awkward.

... and the phone rang in mid-edit. Thanks for noticing while the original post could be edited. :-)

Cmon friends. I know, you can do better. This great project needs you help. Please donate and write it down here.

In Germany we have a good saying:
Tue gutes und sprich darüber

English:

Do good things, and talk about it.

Can't make the challenge because I've reached the annual limit on my pre-paid CC. Can't start using it again until 30th Sept, so will make a donation around that time.

Just dropped in to tell you that we've hit the 1,000 euro today :)
That's about 1,450 US dollars.
And there is still a week to go.

Hmm, about 22 donations since this started 12 days ago. BOINC is predicated on the idea that many hosts doing part of the work adds up to a large compute capability. In the same way, many small contributions would add up to significant funding for the project.

In an effort to encourage those of you who are holding back because you feel the amount you can afford isn't significant, I'm going to do sort of a matching grant thing:

On September 26 2009, I will donate 400 USD for each day in this drive when there were 10 or more contributions recorded. I intend to use the record page linked above to make the determination of which days qualify, IOW the counts will be based on Berkeley days. But if champ has more accurate information on when contributions were made which indicates more 10+ days than that record, I'll use that count instead.

I am aware that someone might make 10 separate donations in one day to get my matching contribution, I'd rather that didn't happen but will fufill my side of the bargain even so.
                                                                  Joe

I gave $50 earlier this month. Didn't realize that there was an ongoing challenge.

I announced to my family that I am a participant in the project. There was some moderate interest. It is nice to participate in finding the most important questions about the nature of mankind and the universe: "Is this it? Is this all??"

My brother says the project "isn't practical" because the universe is too big, and we'll never see an answer in any of our lifetimes. I said that that the answer may be not forthcoming immediately, but to not look at all, to accept that we're the only intelligent living beings in the universe doomed to know only this single "electron" of a planet out of the vastness of everything is, at best, short-sighted.

One day we'll find something, and I'm going to help.

My offer from slightly over 2 days ago is still running, I'll be disappointed if there are too few participants willing or able to donate 10 dollars to trigger it.

SETI@Netherlands is celebrating its 10th Anniversary today!
In honour of that fact we've been organizing a donation rally for SETI@home.
I'm pleased to tell you that this has accumulated to a staggering $ 1,760,--.

To complete the donation, the SETI@Netherlands foundation will add an amount to make it a nice $ 2,000,--.
Today I will give the order to submit that to SETI@home.

So there is another donation on it's way, meant to arrive at the 25th of september :)
