Heatsink for MSI K9A2 Platinum ?

I have the MSI K9A2 Platinum mobo with AMD Phenom II X4 940 BE. Max. 62 °C CPU heatspreader. Current CPU full load - ambient ~ 17 °C - CPU ~ 52 °C with stock heatsink. Too much temps.. I guess the heatsink isn't installed well - also because the heatpipes of the heatsink have contact to the socket border and because of this not well contact to the CPU. The mobo have not much place for a big heatsink. I have the same cpu - its on a Gigabyte MA790GP-DS4H motherboard. When it first runs up no loading, it runs at about 35 degrees, at full load it went to 52 degrees. I installed a fan control utility for the cpu fan, and now run that at 85% of its full speed (its at 30% on default loading). That has reduced the temp down to 46 degrees, all cores fully loaded (CPDN) and SETI or GPUGRID running on the card - which is fine as a running temp for that cpu. Thats in a cramped mid size Case as I have a four disk Raid in there, so it will run slightly hotter than you would expect, but the outcome with the increase on the cpu fan speed has done the business. Try running the stock fan higher on the cpu, it would save messing with the hardware and some cash. Regards Zy |

@ Zydor Which ambient you had/have at this temps? @ all ..sorry.. I forgot.. Cool&Quiet OFF and fan on high speed all the time.. [If I remember correct it's ~ 3,200 RPM with stock heatsink and fan] I worry about - now ~ 17 °C ambient.. if ~ 27 °C ambient I would have the max. 62 °C ! :-( Now the PC is in the basement of the house.. so max. ~ 22 °C in summer. This would mean ~ 57 °C CPU temps. But maybe will change the place of the rig in future? And, it would be well - AFAIK to be ~ 10 °C under the max. CPU temp if 24/7 crunching.. AND - in future I would like to OC the CPU.. but without changing the Vcore.. so from 3.0 GHz only to ~ 3.3 GHz maybe.. but also without changing Vcore the temp will rise.. |

that was my rig sutara. My mobo blew up a week ago though. The Coolermaster works great. The stock CPU does not work great. I have my quad OC'ed to 3.4 ghz and its running about 44 degrees on a Coolermaster Hyper Z600 You'll need to bump up the Vcore just slightly and the FSB on AMD Overdrive to get to 3.4 ghz. YOu'll have to pull your mobo to install the bigger HSF as well. The Hyper z600 comes with 1 120mm fan but has hardware for 1 more so you can increase air flow. Ohh.. a pity.. :-( and now you made me afraid.. ;-) What's damaged? Maybe too much voltage? I would like to OC without changing the voltage.. because of wattage/MHz.. I'm little afraid because of tower heatsinks.. because the northbridge and voltage transformer don't enjoy airflow.. Maybe because of this your mobo gone? Ohh.. the Z600 is at place #23.. ~ 3.5 °C warmer as the IFX-14.. The IFX-14 is convex because of the concave Intel CPUs.. So for my AMD [which are very flat!] I would loose performance, or need to make it flat.. but if the nickel is complete away - then the copper (which have contact with air) will get 'black' and start to rust.. My favorite would be the Noctua NH-C12P [top flow] heatsink. But I'm afraid that he will not fit on my (our ;-) mobo. Or how I could cool the northbridge and voltage transformer if a tower heatsink is installed? BTW. You had/have 1066 MHz RAM installed? [supported for only >= AM2+ CPUs] The BIOS is not very userfriendly.. I think.. I had 'better' BIOS on other mobos.. ;-) ..how you can make that the installed RAM is running at 1066 MHz? Current 800 MHz RAM installed and everything on AUTO. I have also 1066 MHz RAM available here.. ;-) Maybe you could help with my OC? ;-) You found well sides in Inet for AMD OC? I thought maybe only changing the CPU multiplier from 15 to 16,5 [3.3 GHz] and everything fine.. ;-) I read, that for AMD OC you need always to reduce the HT multiplier? That's correct? |

My current background temperature in the room is about 22/23 degrees taking into account the heat output from the Beasts I have in there. If I turn on the stock fan full tilt cpu will go down another 2/3 degrees, so I figure that'll do for me, have enough in reserve for the hot days if needed without constantly messing with the hardware. Its running at 3.2 Ghz - fsb and vcore at default untouched. I did get to 3.4 ghz and started getting errors, so backed off to 3.3ghz, that was solid and therefore I backed off one more step for safety. All is fine for me, the difference between 3.2 and 3.3 in real world terms for me wasnt worth it, so I stayed at 3.2. I did get the 1066 matched memory for it (Corsair) and that was worth it. I just changed the cpu multiplier to 16, left the rest as is. I've seen them go to 3.7ghz on water, and heard a claim of going to 3.8, but thats getting hairy. On air, they will not go above 3.4 unless you live in a fridge :) As mentioned above at 3.4 you need to get the better third party fans, but at 3.2 and 3.3 stock seems to do it fine. It all depends on whether or not the real world performance at 3.4 compared to 3.2/3.3 is worth it for you in your circumstances. I took the view it wasnt worth pushing the edge for the practical benefit I got, so stayed at 3.2 for a stress free life :) Regards Zy |
