Message 880495 - Posted: 29 Mar 2009, 17:13:29 UTC

Is there someone who can explain me what are the task? I mean, what I exactly have to do from my pc to co-operate? just keep it on, or do somenthing when I'll eventually receive a task from Seti@home? Please, help me, I'm too lazy to go reading all the ws instruction and I'd appreciate if someone could explain it to me in a few words. thanks.

If you have BOINC manager installed and attached to SETI@Home, all you can do now is wait. The following message is posted on the SETI@Home home web page:

We are currently managing several problems with the science database server. The database will be okay, but it is currently offline. It was take a while before we are fully back up and running normally. In the meantime we will mostly be unable to create new workunits, so expect your clients to run idle for the next few days (unless you are running other BOINC projects!).

You have done all what was necessary: download/install BOINC and connect to SETI.

BOINC will take care of the rest. You just keep your PC on and online.

You seem to have already received two tasks and they will be processed and resent to the server when ready.

One of them is a rather long-running task (AstroPulse), though. It will take about two to three weeks to complete on your PC. The other (first) one should be ready after about ten hours.

Gruß,
Gundolf

Thank you very much for your help; just one last question: do I have to keep my pc always on or can I switch it off sometimes (i.e. when I'm out or at nite)

Thank a lot for your kind help.

You can certainly turn off the PC when you are not using it. Please note that if you set the option to calculate while the computer is in use to no, and you turn th emachine off when you are not using it, BOINC will never get any work done.

When you make a mmajor change to the routine that you do with your computer, you should monitor BOINC a bit more carefully as it uses the fraction of on time as one of the parameters to the calculaiton for how much work to keep on your computer, and how hard to work at meeting deadlines. It will take a little while for these numbers to stabilize when you do make a change.

The application saves checkpoints so that it knows where to start up again. Boinc also keeps track of % of real time it runs so that it has an idea how much up time it has and it can judge how much work can safely be downloaded and expect it to be returned on time.

thank you for your help.

Just one warning. There are projects (not S@H) that do NOT checkpoint. If you turn your machine off, these projects may not be suitable for you. Some of these projects have tasks that last only an hour or so, but others have tasks that last for a couple of days.

All of the S@H applications do checkpoint.

I thank you for your warning but SETI is the only project i'm intrested in, so maybe I shouldn't find troubles with checkpoint activity; am'I right?

I'm sorry, I was reflecting on your message: do you think I could have some problem with ASTRO PULSE by turning on and off my pc? Astro Pulse is it a part of Seti@Home project or is it another project?: from what I tried to understand, it seems to me that it regards the research for eventual ET wideband system of communication, so it should be included in Seti@Home.
Sorry, as you probably understand, I'm very intrested in all this but it's also very hard to me to understand because I'd never studied any scientific
subject

Astrolpulse is just an extention of Seti's search for ET. Instead of looking for a signal in a very narrow bandwith, it looks at a broader band of frequencies.

AstroPulse and SETI Enhanced are both applications from SETI@Home. All of the S@H applications so far have done checkpointing. So if S@H is your only project, then you should not lose work by chutting down your computer.
