Kittyman update........

My right eye continues to go off into the woods.

It is mostly useless now.

The only good thing is that my brain seems to have remapped, and mostly ignores the input from the bum eye.

So I can still function with the one I have left.

It's making work rather difficult. Without both eyes, you lose most of your depth perception. So, as an electrician, poking the little wires into the crimp connectors is getting to be a little troublesome.

Rather interesting though......at about a 8 inch focal distance, the right eye can do very well. LOL.

I didn't know about this thread. As someone who never has used both eyes at the same time, there are some tricks to living without depth perception. The first is when driving use the 3 second rule to make sure you are not to close to the car in front of you. Next when you need to estimate distance, do it by the size of the thing. When working close, move things mostly in line with your eye and then move them together slowly till they meet. By doing things this way I am able to solder some very small electronics without problems.
The last bit of advice is avoid sports where someone is throwing a ball at you that will hurt if it hits you.

Hi Kittyman. I too rely on one eye. I have a congenital deformity of my left eye and my corrected vision there is 20/200, which I believe is just on the line of legally blind. In all probability your brain is already adjusting to the gradual vision loss you have been experiencing. I think you will find that with one eye you can still do all the things you're accustomed to doing with two eyes. It's all about the brain, dude!

Hi Mark. Looks like your not the only one with eye problems.
I can barely make out roadsigns 4 metres away with my right eye. Even then, it is fuzzy no matter what distance. Left eye is more or less perfect though.
I only passed my Private Pilot License Class 2 medical, because I had glasses.

That is wonderful of you to reveal that to me hon.......

Really.

I must go to sleep now.....I know I said that a few hours ago.

To know that there is somebody else out there that struggles with this condition........

You never said anything about it before, Angie.

Not the only one-eyed wonder on the boards then?

Thanks for sharing. Thanks. That helps more than you know.
Especially coming from you.

Well, in about a month I have an appointment to analyze what is going on with my dead right eye, and if there is anything than can be done with it....

Depth perception is about gone now.......single plane vision.

Try taping off one of your eyes and going about your usual routine. But be careful......you might harm yourself.

I have to be so careful going up and down stairs and climbing on and off ladders to do my daily tasks at work......and poking those little wires into the crimp connectors is getting to be a real chore. I am relying on touch more than sight sometimes.......sigh.

Sorry to hear this Mark.

No need to be sorry, Mike.
It is what it is. I am just at a loss right now as to how to deal with it........or just accept it.

My hope when I started this thread was that somebody else would have dealt with it and could lend some advice.

I guess this is a more rare condition than I had realized.

Because I have not had one response from anybody diagnosed with this condition.

But it gets worse every day......week......month......whatever.

At least I gotta thank God I still have one eye that works, eh?

The eyes are not getting any better, but one realizes that other senses get stronger when one goes away.......

I have an appointment with the eye doc on the 8th of next month........she was the one who first diagnosed me with this problem.
Dunno what she will say when I tell her that it has since gone from bad to hopeless.

It's a wonderful thing that the human mind can somehow deal with this.

Mine has mercifully chosen to ignore the input from my bum right eye and process mostly the information from the left one. If I close my left eye, it's all a blur now.

So my mind has chose to block it out.

We are amazing animals, even when some of our facilities fail.

The only thing is it is making work very difficult....that depth perception thing.
Last week I stepped out of a big 4WD rig......which is twice the street height of what we normally work on. Of course, I glanced down......but 'down' to me was by reflex, the normal height......which it was not.

I almost broke my neck.

Sigh.....
'If God leads you to it, He will get you through it'.......right?

This is soooooooo hard to deal with from one who had 'eagle eyes' up until about 10 years ago. Thank Him for your blessings.......you don't know when what you have today may go away forever.

Mark I've been making Opthamologists say wow for about 20 years. I've had what I call twinkling, fluttering, or flashing in my left eye. They did a visual field test and found that my blind spot is about 10X normal. Because of this they presume that the brain tries to fill in the extra space with color from around the spot sometimes I see light flashes when it cant fill in the space. It was more annoying when I was younger. about 2/3 of people are right eye dominant and 1/3 left. I was left eye dominant so I saw this phenomena. Gradually, I became right eye dominant and hardly notice the flashes anymore. In fact I actually have to concentrate to see them. The best answer I got for the problem was some sort of Calcium channel blockage which cant be repaired. I was asked if I wanted to test for it. Why bother if I cant fix it. It hasnt gotten worse so I can live with it.

I hope yours doesnt get any worse

Thank you skilldude.........

The hard part is no depth perception........your brain needs two eyes for that, and cannot compensate.
I was right eye dominant too.......like viewing through a camera to take a pic, for example.......
Now that it has gone away, some things I used to take foe granted are not so simple.

Depth perception is a fairly short distance thing. My boss is into skydiving and uses three altimeters and an automatic deployment device. However even if all of these thing say he is safe but the thing on the ground start looking to big, he pulls the cord.
I on the other hand have never had depth perception so I don't have any idea how it works or feels. I don't bump into thing so I know it can be done but it takes time to break the old habits.
When I use both eyes, I see two images overlaid on each other. How can you tell what you are looking at when you are seeing double all the time? Yes I know the brain sorts it out but that's not how it looks to me.

I have been doing it from the time I started crawling. Very simple for me but hard for everybody who has used two eyes all of their life. I never use both eyes at the same time unless I am playing around. I get in trouble when I use two eyes, you get in trouble when you use one.

Well...oh, well.

The kittyman went to the eye doctor this morning so they could have another look-see at what is going on with my eyes.

It was not pretty, as they say.

My left eye has weakened only slightly, and can still be corrected to 20/20 with the proper prescription.

My right eye is another story. It was about a year ago that they diagnosed it with epiretinal membrane. It has gotten steadily worse since then. Right now, my uncorrected vision in my right eye is 20/300. Basically a blur. With lenses, maybe 20/100. A slightly focused blur.
They went to take another scan of the epiretinal membrane to see how it had changed over the last year, and the technician was having trouble getting the scan done.
Upon closer inspection and some more tests, it was determined that on top of the original problem, I now have a rather major cataract, and it's on the back of the lens, which is worse than if it happens to be on the front.

So.....it looks like in a couple of months, I will have cataract surgery on my right eye. Which is basically removing the natural lens and implanting a plastic one in it's place.

The bad news is, while that will remove the cataract, the original epiretinal membrane problem will still exist, and it's unknown how much improvement the cataract surgery will provide. But the eye is basically bricked right now, so I don't think I have any choice but to have it done.

Sigh.
