I have 500+ hours each invested in these WU already, can I move them to another machine to get them finished in time? All my other machines are quad 2.8G P4's. As it stands right now my machine is on target to deliver the WU on the 6th day after the deadline

You can move the entire BOINC installation directory to a machine that does not have BOINC installed on it, but you cannot move just a single task from one computer to another.

If your computer completes the task before the replacement completes the task, then you will get credit anyway.

I am running Astro Plus and am ready to uninstall. My computer is not on 24/7. Currently Astro Plus is working on a project that was due 4-4-09 and a message says the previous one failed.
I thought the point of running this information was to help decipher all of the information that comes in. That said...if deciphering the information fails, what is the point of running it?

Your computers last contact with Seti was 6 Mar 2009 6:28:20 UTC and currently has no tasks assigned to it by Seti. Perhaps you should contact the project page for "Astro Plus" as that project is not known here at Seti.

I tried copying the BOINC directory to antoher machine and then it got a computation error. Its still running on the original machine but its fairly clear it will be done about 6 days late.

What directory was I suppose to copy over?

If using BOINC v6.x, the BOINC data directory, which is in a hidden folder by default, and where the hidden folder is located also depends on which OS you're using.

For Windows XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC

For Windows Vista:

C:\ProgramData\BOINC

The "Program Files" directory is just the binary directory. Note that the directory I posted above is "ProgramData", which is different than the common "Program Files" directory.

Dajohnso,

Look again. You should have gotten the files from program data folder not the program files folder. I know it's confusing but I didn't do it. :)

I am running 6.6.31. I dont have a program data folder anywhere on my machine. I do have a data folder under BOINC which is on my E: drive (I installed BOINC on my E: drives, there isnt much else installed on it so theres not much to look though to find it). In the data directory there is a project folder, seti, and I see the AP data files in there as well. When I copied the entire directory to another machine I got computation errors? Let me try it again.

The Work Units are allocated to a particular machine. If they are moved to another machine they will error out- it's a response to a lot of the cheating for stats that went on with the original Seti project (pre-BOINC). Work Units need to be processed by the machine they were downloaded to.

You won't. It will be a Programdata folder & it will be on the C: drive by default. No space between programe & data. Programe Files does have a space between the programe & files.
Installing on a a drive other than C:, i've no idea what the result would be.

For Boinc V6.x.x
The default BOINC folder is C:\Program Files\BOINC\

The default data folder
On Windows 2000/XP/Server is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC Data\
On Windows Vista/Win7 is C:\ProgramData\BOINC
The folders may be hidden. Open the drive folder and Tools Menu - Folder Options - View Tab. Select "Show hidden files and folders".

On a fresh install you can select to put the BOINC folder anywhere you want and data folder anywhere except under BOINC folder or the Program Files folder.

To move an existing install, do an uninstall then move the folders. Reinstall making sure to point the installer to the new locations.

For example I did my install to D:\BOINC
and my data to D:\BOINC Data

Windows also hides the programdata directory. You have to know it is there, and just type c:\programdata\boinc into the explorer path to get there.

No more need to know where the BOINC Data folder is -

use "Lunatics' Unified Installer"

For more details Look:

Only if you are installing optimized applications. There is still a need to know where it is for other operations.

For ease of access I don't use the default locations -
I install to:
C:\BOINC
C:\BOINC-Data

I think that if BOINC is reinstalled and the folders are Changed manually,
the installer will move all the files to the new folders
(so no work will be lost and the BOINC-Data will be easily accessible)

I think that this only happens when upgrading from version 5.x. So, better make the copy yourself.
