Message 831842 - Posted: 18 Nov 2008, 16:08:49 UTC

I have set my preference to keep 9 days of work in the queue for both of my computers, but while one computer has dozens of tasks in the queue, the other one has none at all. Why is that?

Message 831950 - Posted: 19 Nov 2008, 0:27:40 UTC - in response to Message 831842.

I have set my preference to keep 9 days of work in the queue for both of my computers, but while one computer has dozens of tasks in the queue, the other one has none at all. Why is that?

To answer that, we need a great deal more information:

For starters, please post some of the messages from the messages tab. This can give us an idea of which path to follow down.

Are there any tasks on the system at all?

Message 832298 - Posted: 20 Nov 2008, 2:27:46 UTC - in response to Message 831950.

Yes, there were 3 tasks the last time I was logged onto that computer.

One task was waiting to report, and 2 were calculating on the 2 CPUs.

There used to be up to a dozen in the queue, but recently the queue is not being refilled, and often the Boinc application is idle.

The host average on the statistics page has dropped to half of what it used to be.

There are messages which say something like

Sending scheduler request: To fetch work. Requesting 54321 seconds of work, reporting 2 completed tasks

or

Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 5 completed tasks

which would be followed by something like

Scheduler request succeeded: got 1 new tasks

or

Scheduler request succeeded: got 0 new tasks

When next I log onto that computer I will copy a bunch of messages to post here.

54K seconds is a bit more than a half a day.

Got 0 new tasks means that there is either an error message associated - it would be displayed with this message, or the server is just out of work.

Message 832459 - Posted: 20 Nov 2008, 17:04:59 UTC - in response to Message 832319.

Here are the messages from the log. I have thinned it somewhat by deleting the upload and download message. If there are any messages that you are expecting but not seeing, let me know and I will send the whole log.

Where you see "Requested by user" that is because I saw that there were no tasks in the queue, and sometimes there are no tasks running either, so I hit update to try to get some tasks. Most of the time the Boinc system will request 0 tasks, in spite of the fact that there is nothing in the queue.

So the question is ... Why does the Boinc system request no tasks when I have asked for it to keep 9 days in the queue, and the queue is empty?

Three questions:

Is SETI your only project?
Do you power off your computer or leave it running when not using it?
In your messages, it indicates that you're using a "preferences override file", which means your using local preferences instead of web preferences, have you checked your local preferences for any conflicting settings?

I would also check the section between <time_stats> and </time_stats> in the client_state.xml file in your BOINC data directory. Post it (the section!) here if the numbers tell you nothing.

Yes it is.

Yes, this computer is on all the time.

From...

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\global_prefs_override.xml

...I found the following...

<global_preferences>

Perhaps the red item is the cause?
If so, can I just delete the line from the file, or just delete the file?
What is the meaning and effect of the green item?

In your messages, it indicates that you're using a "preferences override file", which means your using local preferences instead of web preferences, have you checked your local preferences for any conflicting settings?

In particular, what settings do you have for "disk and memory usage" in the BOINC Manager?

The local preferences from Boinc Manager / Advanced / Preferences / Disk and Memory Usage tab

--- Disk Usage ---
Use at most 40.00 Gigabytes of disk space
Leave at least 30.00 Gigabytes of disk space free
Use at most 50 % of total disk space
Write to disk at most every 60 seconds
Use at most 75% of page file (swap space)
--- Memory Usage ---
Use at most 50 % when computer is in use
Use at most 90 % when computer is idle
[ ] Leave applications in memory while suspended

The last item is not checked.

I think the leave at most 30 gigs of disk space free may cause a problem depending on how much disk space you have, and especailly since you have 40 set as the max. Try setting that to 0.1 gigs or 1 gig.

The text you mentioned in green is how many days worth of work BOINC tries to keep on your system. On the BOINC Manager that is located in Network Usage.

The item in red I have set to 0.001 (anything less is ignorned) and is on the web page preferences so since it appears you are using the local ones they probably don't apply either and are for the minimum work requested for your cache. You should have some value there other than 0 you can adust that here

I think I've found your problem, see the red line above. Somehow BOINC is of the opinion that your computer is active only for about a tenth percent of the time. I don't know why and I don't know why you aren't told the reason for not receiving tasks. BOINC used to tell you that, but obviously that got changed in recent versions.

What you can do is changing the value in client_state.xml, but that has to be done with caution.

First, you must stop BOINC completely, that is, click Advanced/Shut down connected client and then File/Exit.

Then make a backup copy of client_state.xml (there is always a client_state_prev.xml file, but...)

Now open client_state.xml with a text editor (notepad) and change the above line to
<active_frac>1.000000</active_frac>
(keep the count of zeros)

After saving, make sure that notepad didn't append a .txt suffix to the file and start BOINC Manager again. The number of downloaded tasks should now match your preferences.

Gruß,
Gundolf

Hi, curious if it's possible to adjust that from the Boinc Manger rather than a direct edit in the client state file. I'm assuming you were saying you didn't know why this would be adjusted, because it couldn't be adjusted from the Manager. When you say Boinc thinks the user is only active for a small percent of the time, does that refer to the user network or Boinc in general? Does that have anything to do with the network usage settings? Days of the week override maybe? I guess the real question is, how does that setting get aquired by Boinc in the first place lol? Is it this % on the computer summary page "% of time BOINC client is running 98.4507 %"

I have a general idea how it works but I'm having a hard time trying to figure a scenario that would get the computer to that low of a number.
Edit: I see that was the problem, good to know for the future.

Message 834014 - Posted: 24 Nov 2008, 19:22:02 UTC - in response to Message 834001.

I shut-down Boinc, edited the <active_frac>...</active_frac> line in client_state.xml as indicated to read

<active_frac>1.000000</active_frac>

then restarted Boinc.

Immediately it requested 1.5 million seconds of work and got 20 new tasks.

That is about 8.9 days of work for the 2 CPUs.

That should keep this computer busy through any server outage short of a 10.5 earthquake. :D

I don't think that the "keep 30 Gb free" preference is a problem due to the fact that there is 113 Gb free space on the disk.

Edit: I see that was the problem, good to know for the future.

I hope that you don't expect an answer from me, because I don't know. I just happen to have read in a thread about this problem and the solution (just the method you seem to use :-).

I think normally that value reflects the percentage of time the BOINC client is active, so it has nothing to do with network usage settings. But sometimes, usually caused by manipulations of the system clock, it gets a very low setting. That would be corrected with time by BOINC, but in this case it would have lasted very long, I estimate.

<active_frac> is the fraction of time that BOINC is allowed to process work.

Is the computer set to do work while the user is active? If not, then this may very well be the problem.

This value is automatically calculated by the BOINC client. Adjusting it without figuring out what is wrong in the first place and fixing the underlying problem is asking for trouble and frustration. Trouble as the computer starts returning work late, and frustration as the value falls back to what it was in the first place.

No, it cannot be modified from the manager, nor should it be modifiable from the manager.

<active_frac>0.001268</active_frac>
0.001268 * 7 = 0.008876 active days per week
* 24 = 0.213024 active hours per week
* 60 = 12.78144 active minutes per week

I do not have Boinc configured to stop computing when the computer is "active". Boinc should be active all the time. At its low priority, it simply replaces the System Idle Process, using every CPU nano-second that is not being used to do something else for me.

Nor do I have any time frame limits set. Thus Boinc should run any time of the day, every day.

So Boinc should never have computed its active fraction to be less than 13 minutes per week unless there is a bug in that calculation.
