Message 831461 - Posted: 17 Nov 2008, 6:42:51 UTC

There are 7 stickys with astropulse information and 3 with donation information. Some of the threads have gotten quite long.

When I call up this forum, all I see at first glance is all the stickys.

It's been my observation that new users are getting confused and are asking some basic questions in these stickys that should be asked elsewhere. Some of the sticky threads are now so long people are not reading the info at the beginning that was the reason for it being a sticky thread.

I think the mods or owners of these threads need to do some clean up by merging(ie start over) and un stick some of them. Particularly since the upcoming new apps will add to the confusion.

...just my late night 2 cents

This has been a very heated topic in the past... I do agree that some of the threads could be merged and deleted, for example, the Multitbeam/SETI@home Enhanced FAQ. I mostly don't have a problem with it though, because my laptop screen size is 15.4" and 1680x1050 resolution. But of course others will. That's my two cents.

The only gripe I have with them is even on broadband, some of these 200+ reply stickies take a while to load, and with the webserver still having intermittent issues with fully loading a page, particularly lengthy ones, it just adds to the workload of already-overworked servers.

For a few of the stickies, I can see where probably 95% of the posts can be canned, leaving the ones with useful information. Basically starting over, but with the advantage of having all the needed information.

I agree also...

Those threads should be summarised and then started over oncemore.

I think we should also have a new forum for "Announcements, FAQs, Stickies" to declutter the forum for those with smaller than the very latest mega-resolution screens. For example, netbook 'laptop' anyone?

I think the questions are valid.

Perhaps there should be a new forum specifically re: Optimized Applications w/ these stickies relocated there? It would also have practical value in making it easier for users to ask/receive help as threads wouldn't get buried as quickly as they do on NC.

I'll take a look @ possible opportunities for clean-up BUT it should be remembered that w/ all the different platforms, CPUs & OSs.....things do tend to change more frequently than we can keep up w/ revised FAQs etc. Also....many posts actually pertain to specific user install/compatibility issues that invariably will "answer" the same question for another user w/ similar. JMO, but I'm of the mindset that while some threads are long, the info needed for 98% of users IS THERE....if one is willing to make a bit of effort & read. If they can't find the answer, "post" a reply w/ the question since that's rather the point of a couple of those specific threads anyway. Running opt aps is intended for advanced users & I don't think it's unreasonable to request a small investment in time and initiative to review the FAQ threads if one is inexperienced or has a specific problem.

Overall, there's always room for improvement, but at least the vast majority of needed info is contained w/in these few stickies unlike a few short years ago when it could be spread & buried amongst 10+ threads of differing timeframes.

I also think there should be a separate forum for Donations & discussion. New updates an be posted there w/ only 1 sticky on NC that essentially directs people to other forum w/ the new announcement.

Thank you for the concerns.

The problem is that people tend to isolate themselves on specific forums and not look at other forums. I will start looking at them Thanksgiving weekend when I have some extended free time to try to combine some.

Is there a chance that, instead of stickying them inside the forums that they could be stickied on the forum index page? Or bad idea?

Again people don't always look at the Forum Index. This is info that needs to be visible. Something will have to be worked out.

Really? That's the way I always come in. Any data that shows people bookmarking forums instead of the index?

I combined 3 donations threads into 1 and updated the Hardware Donations section. About all I can do right at this moment without consulting other people.

While you are looking at this, please could you also take a look at whether there is still a need for separate Message boards and Questions and Answers pages.

I have noticed that some projects have these combined. It may help to get some of the more "help related" posts into a more appropriate forum, as NC seems to be very much a "catch all" forum at the moment.

At the same time you could create an extra Optimized Apps forum to help users to get the best app for their CPU.

Keith.

This process is currently only for stickies. We will not be adding any new forums or removing any at this current time.

Thanks for the reply. I hope my suggestion will be considered by admin when they have time to look at it. I think it has been suggested before by others.

Just to insert my two cents, I come here via the seti homepage since everything I need to get to has links out there on the front.

On the rare occasion when I have to shut my brower it always opens 5 Seti tab - NC, Q&A index, Tech news, Beta Seti and Astropulse. I rarely see the main index page or home page unless I need to see something special. Since I can assign short names to web pages I usually have 15 tabs open on one line.
