Q: What is the 'bad' thing about building new rigs with a new core-architecture ?

A: You can't do anything before you got the CPUs, the motherboards and the CPU-Coolers...

Yesterday I received the first really 'new' part for my two lga1366-rigs: the ASUS Rampage II Extreme mobo...and I was really surprised because I was quite sure this one would be one of the parts taking the longest time to be available, something about late next week or even later...and now it's here at all. Sure I was happy...at first... ;)

Normally, when building a new lga775-rig I used spare parts or parts from other rigs until all new ordered parts had arrived. That would not be a prob here regarding case, RAM, the graphics card, HDD, PSU, CD-ROM and the coolers. Even the CPU-cooler wouldn't be a prob because in this special case I would 'accept' to use the Intel-stock cooler from the boxed version just to have it running...
But even then I would need a CPU here...and the latest delivery dates are saying that the i920 will arrive at my dealer on Monday, so I should have it on Wednesday...and the i965-XE is scheduled for next friday (21st), keeping me waiting until at least tuesday...
And I'm not the patient type of guy...so in the end it's a pain to have this mobo here...when the only thing I can do is reading the manual... ;)
I never wanted a week to go by so heavy (and wishing that I would have gotten all the parts at the same day)... ;)

(Btw: I know that I'm crazy...but only a little bit... ;) )

Well Ul1 reading the manual is not that bad an idea. I am still working on 2 rigs that I started building in '07 You might recall my post about an ASUS P5K Dx with a Q6600 that was slower than a P2. I ended up with two of them. Think I am now on first name basis with the ASUS service techs. The MB's have been back to ASUS twice for repair and I just got them back. Got one running and still has the same problem. Only now the cpu is a Q9550. Today I will try to get the second one running. I have had all the parts for over a year, but I cann't get the MB's to work. This is frustrating.

Microcenter has everything in stock and on sale for a new i7 rig. So very tempting.

The 3 channel kits of DDR3 seem to be lagging a bit....so far I am not seeing anything in the class of my Corsair Dominator 1800/14400 cl7 in a 3 channel kit....
What's the best you folks have found so far?

There isn't even one Triple Channel DDR3 kit in New Zealand at the moment, which is a real downer if I want to get estimates of the cost of my machine!

I've ordered these: "3MB Corsair DDR3 1600MHz 9-9-9-24 XMS3 Dominator" and "3MB OCZ DDR3 1600MHz 8-8-8-24 Gold Z3 XTC"...

The fastest I found were from Kingston:
- 1800MHz 9-9-9-27 (264€)
- 1866MHz 9-9-9-27 (269€)
- 2000MHz CL9 (284€)

...continued...

Ups: today I received the case (LianLi V1000+) and the CPU-cooler (Noctua NH-U12P) for the second rig; so I can start 'playing with the toys' a little...starting by exchanging the stock fans for some stormy Scythe Ultra Kazes... :)

Downs: I got informed that both the RAM-kits from Corsair and OCZ aren't available yet... :(
