Message 825808 - Posted: 1 Nov 2008, 22:40:35 UTC

About a year ago I reported the following:

"Recently when viewing the SETI website using Camino most pages are in German even though the site shows my default language as English. For example, I am tying into a box labeled "Nachrict".

If I use Safari everything is in English.

No great problem but I wanted to report it. It seems to have started, or I noticed it, after upgrading to BOINC Manager 5.10.29."

Soon after I reported this the problem went away. Today I'm seeing a combination of English, German, Italian and Japanese on Camino.

I use firefox and half the site is in English the other half is in Hungarian.
Resetting default language does not work. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Regards,
Cobbler.

Have you tried going to the home page and following the 'Languages' link to reset your cookie.

Have you tried going to the home page and following the 'Languages' link to reset your cookie.

I did! It doesn't work, but I did some research. I'm using IE6 and that's (the top of) my current language selection page:
Language selection

HOME TEILNEHMEN ÃœBER COMMUNITY ACCOUNT STATISTICS

This web site is available in several languages. The currently selected language is: English (English).

Normally the choice of language is determined by your browser's language setting, which is: en,de;q=0.5.
As you can see, it tells that the current selected language is English (which is correct), but the links are (partially) in German. There's no change if I select "en English (English)" or "de German (Deutsch)". By the way, The homepage shows:
TEILNEHMEN - ÃœBER - COMMUNITY - IHR KONTO - STATISTIKEN

Only when I delete either the German or English entry in Microsoft IE: Tools/Internet Options/Languages, I get the desired result (which is quite annoying):
Language selection

HOME PARTICIPATE ABOUT COMMUNITY ACCOUNT STATISTICS

This web site is available in several languages. The currently selected language is: English (English).

Normally the choice of language is determined by your browser's language setting, which is: en.
respectively:
Language selection

Mine is half English and either half Japanese, Korean, or Chinese...

保留中の功績 <---------This is what one of my links looks like. I'm not sure if it is my average or pending credit or preferences or what. It's confusing.

I do know that when I click Account Manager from the BOINC program, it takes me to an all English page, but then when I click anything on that page, it goes right back to whichever language that is.

I too see mixed languages in Firefox 2 and 3. I have two English language
settings and Japanese set in my Firefox language preferences. The order doesn't
appear to matter -- I get mixed languages whether Japanese is first or third.

Removing Japanese from Firefox's languages and reloading is the only way I've
found so far to get completely English.

(I haven't tried the reverse to see if I can get completely Japanese.)

Just to add to this thread. I too am getting combined English and (maybe) Japaneese. Makes even simple things like selecting the right buttons/links to press to post this "fun". :-(

Firefox v3.0.3 here.

I'm having the same problem.

I'm using Firefox 3.0.4 on WinXP and when I view this forum, I'm getting Japanese headings!

When I look at the encoding, I see Unicode (UTF-8), but why are all my headings and buttons all appearing in Japanese?

Hmm, so evidently this is a Firefox problem. I'm using FF 3.0.4. So when I go into Tools -> Options, go to the Content tab and under Languages there's a button called Choose. I remove Japanese and presto, the menus are back to English again!

It' not a Firefox only problem. With IE6 at least it's the same (with other option and button names :-). See above in this same thread.

I also encounter this with FF3.0.4 32 bit on GNU/Linux/X11 (Slackware 12.1). It occurs with JavaScript on or off. My locale settings are en_GB.UTF8

It also occurs with Opera 9.62 on the same platform, if I add a non-english locale under "Preferred languages for web pages".

Is everyone affected using a UTF8 locale by default?

The reason seems to be that the website looks at the "lang" cookie for one part of the content and to look at the language settings of the browser for another.
This seesms like a bug that is easy reproducable and curable.

You are at least partly right.

for example, at the moment it sees the Language page like this, with Canadian French set in cookie, an several languages set in the browser.
"SETI@Home Language Page" wrote:

HOME PARTICIPER A PROPOS COMMUNAUTE ACCOUNT STATISTICS

This web site is available in several languages. The currently selected language is: French/Canada (French/Canada).

Normally the choice of language is determined by your browser's language setting, which is: en-gb,en;q=0.8,en-us;q=0.7,af;q=0.5,ja;q=0.3,nl;q=0.2. You can change this setting using:

* Firefox: Tools/Options/General
* Microsoft IE: Tools/Internet Options/Languages

Or you can select a language by clicking on one of the links. This will send your browser a cookie; make sure your browser accepts cookies from our domain.

That does not quite explain how if your cookie is set to English, you still get multiple languages if you have multiple preferred languages, as in the following example. The language detection is obviously totally borked.

i'm using camino, on mac os x 10.5, and forme this forum and the website apppears mainly in spanish, with some bits if any, in portuguese ,cause of the similarity of both languages, many isolated words are the same, meaning i can't be sure if any portuguese is used at all!

i'v tried the languages cookie, and it still stays in the smae spanish mambo jambo mix... my camino is in portuguese, as all of the mac os x.
on firefox and safari, the main languages is english, i've tried the cookie for portuguese and the browser preferences and it still stays in portugues, even if my browsers are set to portuguese as default..
something is really screwed here!

and please, for most of us portuguese speaking, spanish sites as if they were portuguese is almost an insult... we have 900 years of neighboury fights and, altough i like them, it makes me a bit angry if my language is mistaken as spanish!

if i can help with the translation, if enough portuguese is not present, mail me!

After the B.O.I.N.C. was down for maintenance. going to the User menu of Alien Beacon yields the headers now in Cyrillic, having Russian names, instead of English. Example:

Главная Участие О проекте Сообщество ACCOUNT STATISTICS

Имя Всего очков В среднем за день Главная Участие О проекте Сообщество ACCOUNT STATISTICS

Имя Всего очков В среднем за день Страна

Account and Statistics remain unchanged, but Home is now: Glavnaya, and Community
is now: Covchestvo etc. I have posted this to Alien Beacon BB as well..now sure where the error is. Just thought someone should know.
My preferences are set to English.
Thanks.

I am having a similar problem. Tabs, buttons, directions appear in Japanese, Russian and Spanish. In some instances it is impossible to figure out what is what. I am new to BOINC and have only recently starting using/trying to use the SETI@HOME web site. So I don't have any visual memory of where navigation tools are on any particular page. This is depressing. But thanks, for the background.

cheers

If you have Turkish in your browser's language settings, all you see is a blank page. Removing it resolves the issue. Turkish translation of web pages was available some time ago and later it was removed. I wonder if this is somehow related with it.
