My HD temp is running hot -171 and the fan speed is up .... and has been. Is there any connection to my SETI prefs settings that could have an effect on this?

Are you describing the temperature of the hard drive, or do you mean the temperature of the processor?

If the hard drive is running at 171 degrees, then the sensor is wrong.

If the processor is running at 171 degrees, then you've got a problem. If you haven't dusted your computer lately, then get some compressed air, open up the case and blow all the dust out of it.

If that doesn't work, then you can change the Use at most... setting in the Computing preferences section of the online preferences. It defaults to 100%. All you need to do is lower it until your temps aren't as extreme.

Sounds like something has that iMac G5 clogged up, the hard drive should never be that hot, nor the processor.

The iMac G5 does collect dust on the air intake going to the processor. Air circulation slows and the hot air off the processor then goes to the hard drive.
Really should be taken apart and cleaned but not recommended for a user task. If you don't want to take it to a shop then just get an air hose, remove the back by loosening the three screws across the bottom and lifting the rear housing up and off then gently blow out what dust you can. Careful of static.

Mine needs it about once a year.
