Question 26 Part 2 (1 Point) : What is the area of an equalateral pentagon of side 1? Again, no expressions in trigonometric functions... "Simple" maths and "trigonometric functions" never went together in my book... |

Question 26 Part 2 (1 Point) : What is the area of an equalateral pentagon of side 1? Again, no expressions in trigonometric functions... (Hint: Solve Q26 Part 1 first) My calculation (based on the answer for pt 1): 1.92355221125 [probably wrong now I look again, but oh well...] [EDIT: New Answer! 1.3471044225 ] "Living by the wisdom of computer science doesn't sound so bad after all. Luke, Apologies for not taking part, but usually, with my usual sense of bad timing, when I have had time the questions have already been answered. Andy But you can try this |

Luke, No worries WinterKnight! Great link you've got there! I liked Questions 3 & 6! For question 3 have a look at: Birthday Paradox @ Mumps: It's becoming harder and harder the find problems!!! So I suppose Simple & Trigonometric Functions go hand in hand... Well Done to JD! Who scored the point for this question! Standings: 1. Jason Gee - 6 1/2 Points 2. Fred - 4 1/2 Points 3. BeefDog - 3 1/2 Points 4. JDWhale - 3 1/2 Points 5. Gas Giant - 1 Point 6. Dominique - 1 Point 7. Zach Parker - 1 Point 8. Erni - 1 Point 9. Lanisa - 1 Point 10. Sarge - 1/2 Point 11. TBD... Now for the finale in Q26... Question 26 Part 3 (1 Point) : What is the volume of a dodecahedron with side (of pentagon) equal to 1? Hint: Solve P2, P1 first.... Luke. - Luke. |

@ Mumps: It's becoming harder and harder the find problems!!! So I suppose Simple & Trigonometric Functions go hand in hand... Well, I'm not complaining about the problems. :-) My timing is just atrocious though. Never can get to the thread before someone else posts an answer. |

Question 29 (1 Point): In blackjack if the dealer is showing an ace you make "take insurance" or bet that his/her other card is a ten. A winning bet pays 2:1 (win $2 for every $1 bet, keeping original bet). What is the house advantage in this bet? How many non-tens would you have to remove from a single deck game to make it a fair bet? Assume you know nothing about the cards that have already been played (including the dealer's ace and your own) Luke. - Luke. |

Well Done to Fred! That's 1/2 a point to you.... oh... watch out Jason... Fred's catching up... Question...... I toss back a shot, and tell the dealer to **** off and flip me a card..... What are the odds that he will call house security within 2 minutes or less...... At an ambient of 70f, at 3:00am or later (Vegas time)....(I have two pair, but of course, he doesn't know that....)...with the faux Elvis show starting in 2 minutes, and someone has just kicked the jackpot on the nickels for 5 grand........on Tuesday. Well Done to Fred! That's 1/2 a point to you.... oh... watch out Jason... Fred's catching up... So many ***** variables (phhh...)... I'll knock back a shot now and assume you mean under the usual "mathematical" conditions.... yikes... - Luke. |

LOL.....That means you mean 'real life' conditions.....eh?Well Done to Fred! That's 1/2 a point to you.... oh... watch out Jason... Fred's catching up... BTW....it is a 'kobayahsi maru' scenario...........you cannot win unless you change the parameters.......LOL. Meaning security is already focused on the drunk raising caine in the coat room....and Spock has passed out in the parking lot......but you could not have known that.....there was no way to win...... How many non-tens would you have to remove from a single deck game to make it a fair bet? Assume you know nothing about the cards that have already been played (including the dealer's ace and your own) Oy!, that's two questions ;D part one: (16/52)*$3 payoff = $0.923 therefore house advantage on $1 bet is : $1 - $0.923 = $0.077 ... (7.7% house advantage) part two: 16 tens out of however many cards remaining must equal one third to be a fair bet: 16*3 = 48, therefore four non-ten cards must be removed from the 52 card deck to be fair.
