I've never seen two in a row, but I know that such WU's exist (this is part of why S@H BOINC instituted the "credit system" that everyone seems so up in arms about). I believe it has something to do with the data the reciever at Aricebo got... something's funky with it (a communication satellite was passing overhead, an airplane was coming in on approach to San Juan, they hit a big ole pulsar in the field of view, etc.) and the data is 'wonky' somehow. I've seen it happen on the old S@H Classic, and I think it's the clients way of saying, "this is junk, I'm not wasting any more time on it" and it very quickly scans the entire bit of data and moves on. BTW, if you've ever flown into San Juan, you fly right by the Aricebo dish... I did, and it was cool to see, so I know my 'airplane' theory is quite plausible. :) |

They simply have to many gaussians, spikes, etc... to compute. The resulting output file would be way to large. Berkeley says these WUs require further study... These WUs are often called "noisy" WUs. |

I > learned me sumthin' today! :D If you look around my site I (or the one for Arecibo) I/they have a number of interesting pictures of the telescope ... If I recall correctly they are accessable on my site from the glossary, look in the "A"s. There is also a discussion and some examples of noisy WU, look at Broadband and narrowband interference in the glossary ... When I get the SETI@Home screen saver captures posted I have several of those as background fillers ...with luck they will be up this week as I struggle to satisfy the bugeoning need for documentation ... I mean, two people assured me they read it ... :)
For BOINC Documentaion: Click Me! |

> Teach - I read it, I read it, I promise > but not ready for the final yet ;) > ---------- No tests, I don't believe in them ... I can take and pass tests, in part because I know how to take tests. Trust me, you can learn how to pass tests with little to no knowledge of the material. As an example, I never got the hang of calculus, yet my calculus grade was an "A" ... I quarter pointed the tests to death ... What I mean is this, I knew how to set the problem up for the start. But after that, I was in over my head most of the time. So, as soon as I knew that I did not know the next step, I would stop. In some cases all I got was the set-up done ... worth a positive 1/4 point ... Many of my classmates would solve into an incorrect answer, -1 point ... Multiple guess and T/F tests pick an answer if you don't know at all, or are unsure. Once you have picked an answer don't change it unless you are really, really sure ... More people change right to wrong than otherwise. You subconsious helped you to pick the best answer, trust me ... That is why I only use essay tests when I teach ... One student answered correctly the question she THOUGHT I asked. And when I read her answer I could see how she had interpretend the question and answered it ... With multiple guess I would have just marked her wrong. Also, answering my essays was part of the thinking/teaching ... With open book and notes and as a take home ... well, I really did find out how much they UNDERSTOOD what I taught ... Puking out my words did not impress me ... thinking and answering with your own understanding ... that is different ... Any way, as Miles Father (or was his mother? Hmmm, time to read the series again) once said to Mark, "this is real life ... and not a test ... "
For BOINC Documentaion: Click Me! |
