Shoemaker-Levy 9 Comet Collides with Jupiter (1994)

The first comet observed to be orbiting a planet rather than the Sun, Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 was discovered by astronomers in March 1993. Sixteen months later, it provided the first direct observation of the collision of two solar system objects not involving the Earth, when fragments of the comet collided with Jupiter's southern hemisphere.

Disneyland Opens in Anaheim, California (1955)

Having welcomed more than 515 million visitors since its opening, Disneyland is perhaps the world's most famous themed amusement park. Walt Disney's original plans called for a modest park to be built on eight acres next to the Disney Studios. A much more ambitious Disneyland opened to invited guests and the media on July 17, 1955, a year after construction had begun. The day's events did not go smoothly.

Prince Andrew, Duke of York, Marries Sarah Ferguson (1986)

Prince Andrew is the third child and second son of Queen Elizabeth II. He has held the title of Duke of York since his marriage to Sarah Ferguson in 1986. Initially, the Duke and Duchess appeared to have a happy marriage, but problems soon surfaced, and the marriage collapsed shortly after tabloid pictures were released showing the Duchess cavorting with her financial advisor.

Mary Queen of Scots Is Deposed (1567)

Mary Stuart was Queen of Scotland from 1542 to 1567. She was forced to abdicate the throne after her husband, Lord Darnley, was murdered and she was implicated in the plot. Mary then fled to England, where she faced a murder inquiry and became a prisoner of the English government. After conspiracies to put her on the throne of England were uncovered, she was tried for treason and ultimately beheaded. Some say her executioners asked for her forgiveness.

Henry IV of France Converts to Catholicism (1593

Henry the IV of France was the first of the Bourbon kings of France, reigning from 1589 until his death. A Protestant, Henry was involved in the Wars of Religion before his accession to the throne. He then converted to Catholicism, allegedly explaining his pragmatic philosophy with the statement, "Paris is worth a mass." He signed the Edict of Nantes granting political rights to Protestants and ruled as one of the most popular French kings

New London Bridge Opens (1831)

In 1831, the more than 600-year-old fire-damaged London Bridge was replaced with a new, five-arched, granite bridge. Designed by John Rennie, the New London Bridge spanned the city's River Thames for over a century. In 1968, it was purchased by American entrepreneur Robert P. McCulloch and reconstructed in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, where it has since become Arizona's second biggest tourist attraction after the Grand Canyon.

Feudalism Abolished in France (1789)

Less than a month after the storming of the Bastille, France's National Assembly held a meeting in which the nobles and clergy, driven partly by fear and partly by an outburst of idealism, relinquished their manorial rights within the course of a few hours. Shortly afterward, the Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, a manifesto comprised of the principles that inspired the French Revolution.

End of the Holy Roman Empire: Francis II Abdicates (1806)

Francis II, last of the Holy Roman Emperors, came to power shortly before the outbreak of war with Napoleon's France. His armies were defeated, and he ceded the left bank of the Rhine to France in exchange for Venetia and Dalmatia. In 1798, he joined the Second Coalition against France, but he was again defeated and eventually consented to the virtual dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire.

Thor Heyerdahl Lands in Polynesia (1947)

Heyerdahl was a Norwegian adventurer with a background in zoology and geography, but his passion lay in cultural anthropology. He theorized that the first settlers of Polynesia were of South American origin, and to support his idea, he and five companions made the crossing from Peru to the Tuamotu Archipelago on a primitive log raft. Heyerdahl describes the voyage in the international bestseller Kon-Tiki.

The Quit India Resolution is Passed (1942)

The Quit India Movement was a revolt initiated by Mahatma Gandhi that effectively set into motion the civil disobedience movement that would topple British rule in India. Thousands of Indians responded to the call, while the British attempted to suppress the movement by arresting over 100,000 people, levying mass fines, and subjecting demonstrators to public floggings.

Northeast Blackout of 2003 Begins (2003)

Caused by a cascading failure of more than 100 power plants originating in Ohio, the Northeast Blackout of 2003 was the largest power outage in North American history and affected an estimated 50 million people in eight US states and Ontario, Canada. Power was not fully restored in New York and Toronto until August 16, and outage-related financial losses were estimated at $6 billion.

Toxic Gas Erupts from Lake Nyos (1986)

Lake Nyos is a deep lake high on the flank of an inactive volcano in Cameroon. A pocket of magma lies beneath the lake, charging the water with an estimated 90 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2). In 1986, a limnic eruption at Lake Nyos triggered the sudden release of about 1.6 million tonnes of CO2 that rushed down nearby valleys, displacing all the air and suffocating approximately 1,700 people within 20 km of the lake

William Wallace is Executed (1305)

Wallace was a Scottish knight who, during the Wars of Scottish Independence, led a resistance movement against the English occupation. He was betrayed to the English by a Scottish knight in 1305, found guilty of treason, and hanged, drawn, and quartered. Much of what is known about his life is based on legend and the poem The Acts and Deeds of Sir William Wallace, Knight of Elderslie, written by 15th-century minstrel Blind Harry.

Potato Chips First Prepared (1853)

It is believed that the original potato chip recipe was created by chef George Crum at a restaurant in Saratoga Springs, NY. Fed up with a customer who continued to send his fried potatoes back with the complaint that they were too thick and soggy, Crum decided to slice the potatoes so thinly that they could not be eaten with a fork. The customer was delighted, and the chips became a regular item on the lodge's menu.

Kellogg-Briand Pact Signed (1928)

The Kellogg-Briand Pact was an agreement between the US and France to renounce war and seek settlement of disputes by peaceful means. It took its name from US Secretary of State Frank B. Kellogg and French foreign minister Aristide Briand. Sixty other nations ultimately ratified the pact, but it made no provision for measures against aggressors and proved ineffective, especially given the practice of waging undeclared wars in the 1930s

Oberlin College Founded (1833)

Oberlin was the first college in the US to regularly admit African-American students and is also the oldest continuously operating coeducational institution. The college has long been associated with progressive causes, and it was a hotbed of abolitionism and a key stop along the Underground Railroad. Both students and faculty were involved in the controversial Oberlin-Wellington Rescue of a fugitive slave in 1858.

September 3, 1783
Treaty of Paris signed

The American Revolution officially comes to an end when representatives of the United States, Great Britain, Spain and France sign the Treaty of Paris on this day in 1783. The signing signified America's status as a free nation, as Britain formally recognized the independence of its 13 former American colonies, and the boundaries of the new republic were agreed upon: Florida north to the Great Lakes and the Atlantic coast west to the Mississippi River.
