Peace Treaty Ends 335 Years' War (1986)

When hostilities between the Netherlands and the Isles of Scilly, an archipelago located off the southwest coast of England, ended, the warring parties recalled their troops, and the conflict was forgotten. Without a treaty declaring its end, however, the 1651 war peacefully became the world's longest, technically lasting 335 years. Despite questions regarding the validity of the declaration of war, peace was officially declared in 1986

"British Bang" on German Archipelago (1947)

Heligoland is a small German archipelago located in the North Sea that consists of two islands: the populated main island of Hauptinsel and the smaller island of Düne. Hauptinsel is commonly divided into three geographic sections, the last of which came into being in 1947, when the Royal Navy detonated 6,800 metric tons of explosives on the island, actually changing its shape. The "British Bang" was the biggest non-nuclear single detonation in history

On April 19, 1897, John J. McDermott of New York won the first Boston Marathon with a time of 2:55:10.

The Boston Marathon was the brainchild of Boston Athletic Association member and inaugural U.S. Olympic team manager John Graham, who was inspired by the marathon at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. With the assistance of Boston businessman Herbert H. Holton, various routes were considered, before a measured distance of 24.5 miles from the Irvington Oval in Boston to Metcalf's Mill in Ashland was eventually selected.

Forty minutes later, the plane was forced to make an emergency landing on a nearby frozen lake

Rome founded
According to tradition, on April 21, 753 B.C., Romulus and his twin brother, Remus, found Rome on the site where they were suckled by a she-wolf as orphaned infants. Actually, the Romulus and Remus myth originated sometime in the fourth century B.C., and the exact date of Rome's founding was set by the Roman scholar Marcus Terentius Varro in the first century B.C.

"Red Baron" Shot Down by Allied Fire (1918)

Manfred von Richthofen, or the "Red Baron," was the WWI German aviator who commanded the 11th Chasing Squadron, known as Richthofen's Flying Circus. He was the most successful flying ace of WWI, shooting down 80 aircraft before being killed in action. In April 1918, he was shot in the chest while pursuing an enemy target over France. He managed to land his plane but died soon after. The Red Baron has since become a symbol of dexterity, daring, and victory.

John Kerry Testifies before Congress on Vietnam (1971)

Kerry was the first Vietnam veteran to testify before Congress about the war. In his testimony, he urged the US to pursue an immediate and unilateral withdrawal based on Vietnam veterans' personal experiences and presented the conclusions of the Winter Soldier Investigation, in which veterans had described personally committing or witnessing war crimes. Kerry's testimony became a hot topic when he ran for president in 2004.

William Shakespeare born

According to tradition, the great English dramatist and poet William Shakespeare is born in Stratford-on-Avon on April 23, 1564. It is impossible to be certain the exact day on which he was born, but church records show that he was baptized on April 26, and three days was a customary amount of time to wait before baptizing a newborn. Shakespeare's date of death is conclusively known, however: it was April 23, 1616. He was 52 years old and had retired to Stratford three years before.

"New Coke" Introduced (1985)

New Coke was the sweeter drink introduced in 1985 by The Coca-Cola Company to replace its flagship soda, Coca-Cola. The move was intended to cater to a seeming public preference for a sweeter soft drink and to combat Pepsi's growing popularity. Public reaction was devastating, and the new cola quickly entered the pantheon of major marketing flops

Woolworth Building Opens in New York City (1913)

The 57-story Woolworth Building is one of the oldest and most famous skyscrapers in New York City. It was constructed in the neo-Gothic style by architect Cass Gilbert, who was commissioned by Frank Woolworth in 1910 to design a new corporate headquarters for his company in Lower Manhattan, opposite City Hall. Construction cost $13.5 million, which Woolworth paid in cash. The Woolworth Building was the tallest in the world until 1930

Universe is created, according to Kepler
On this day in 4977 B.C., the universe is created, according to German mathematician and astronomer Johannes Kepler, considered a founder of modern science. Kepler is best known for his theories explaining the motion of planets.

Kepler was born on December 27, 1571, in Weil der Stadt, Germany. As a university student, he studied the Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus' theories of planetary ordering. Copernicus (1473-1543) believed that the sun, not the earth, was the center of the solar system, a theory that contradicted the prevailing view of the era that the sun revolved around the earth.

World War II monument opens in Washington, D.C.
On April 29, 2004, the National World War II Memorial opens in Washington, D.C., to thousands of visitors, providing overdue recognition for the 16 million U.S. men and women who served in the war. The memorial is located on 7.4 acres on the former site of the Rainbow Pool at the National Mall between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. The Capitol dome is seen to the east, and Arlington Cemetery is just across the Potomac River to the west.

The granite and bronze monument features fountains between arches symbolizing hostilities in Europe and the Far East. The arches are flanked by semicircles of pillars, one each for the states, territories and the District of Columbia. Beyond the pool is a curved wall of 4,000 gold stars, one for every 100 Americans killed in the war. An Announcement Stone proclaims that the memorial honors those "Americans who took up the struggle during the Second World War and made the sacrifices to perpetuate the gift our forefathers entrusted to us: A nation conceived in liberty and justice."
