Bureau of Indian Affairs Created (1824)

Though the Bureau of Indian Affairs was given jurisdiction over trade with Native Americans and was responsible for protecting them from exploitation, it had little success safeguarding Native American rights and, instead, evolved primarily into a land-administering agency. It now acts as trustee over Native American lands and funds, promotes development, and provides Native Americans with various social services.

Assassination Attempt on Gerry Adams (1984)

Adams is an Irish Republican politician, member of Parliament for Belfast West, and president of Sinn Féin, the Irish nationalist movement that has gained notoriety for its association with the volatile Irish Republican Army (IRA). He has been a key figure in Irish peace negotiations and was the main architect of the 1994 IRA ceasefire. In 1984, Adams was seriously wounded when several gunmen opened fire on his car.

Rolls-Royce Ltd Is Founded (1906)

Frederick Henry Royce built his first car, a "Royce," in 1904. That same year, he was introduced to Charles Stewart Rolls, the owner of one of Britain's first car dealerships, and the two soon decided to embark on a joint business venture. They agreed that Royce's cars would be sold exclusively by Rolls, and by 1907, the men were winning awards for the engineering reliability of their cars.

Being Irish I think I can safely say that 462 A.D. was the first report of a Drunken Brawl while celebrating St. Patrick's Day.

BTW I'm glad they didn't dumb down the day like St. Valentines

The Kingdom of Italy Is Proclaimed (1861)

Modern Italy became unified under the house of Savoy on March 17, 1861, largely through the efforts of Cavour, Garibaldi, and Victor Emmanuel II, who became king of Italy that same year. However, the protectorate of Napoleon III over the Papal States delayed the Italian annexation of Rome until 1870, and relations between the Italian government and the papacy, which refused to concede the loss of its temporal power, remained a major problem until 1929

Lon Nol Ousts Prince Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia (1970)

Nol became defense minister and army chief of staff in Norodom Sihanouk's Cambodian government in 1955 and later served as premier under him. In 1970, he led the coup that deposed Sihanouk and assumed control of the government. His unsuccessful attempts at suppressing the Communist Khmer Rouge guerillas plunged the country into civil war, and he ultimately fled the country in 1975.

Sydney Harbour Bridge Opens (1932)

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of Australia's major landmarks, connecting Sydney's central business district with the North Shore commercial and residential areas. Colloquially referred to as the "coat hanger" because of its arch-based design, it is the widest long-span bridge in the world and the highest steel arch bridge, standing as much as 430 ft (131 m) above the harbor

Alcatraz Closes (1963)

Alcatraz, a rocky island in western California's San Francisco Bay, served as a federal prison housing the country's most dangerous criminals from 1934 to 1963. It became a National Recreation Area in 1972, and by the mid-1990s it was attracting almost a million visitors a year. Nicknamed "The Rock," Alcatraz was a symbol of the impregnable maximum security fortress prison. During its 29 years of operation, 34 prisoners attempted escapes, but only three may have succeeded

OK enters national vernacular

On this day in 1839, the initials "O.K." are first published in The Boston Morning Post. Meant as an abbreviation for "oll correct," a popular slang misspelling of "all correct" at the time, OK steadily made its way into the everyday speech of Americans.

During the late 1830s, it was a favorite practice among younger, educated circles to misspell words intentionally, then abbreviate them and use them as slang when talking to one another. Just as teenagers today have their own slang based on distortions of common words, such as "kewl" for "cool" or "DZ" for "these," the "in crowd" of the 1830s had a whole host of slang terms they abbreviated. Popular abbreviations included "KY" for "No use" ("know yuse"), "KG" for "No go" ("Know go"), and "OW" for all right ("oll wright").

The Mont Blanc Tunnel Fire (1999)

The Mont Blanc Tunnel was completed in 1965 and soon became a major trans-Alpine transport route. On March 24, 1999, a truck carrying a cargo of flour and margarine caught fire in the tunnel. The margarine load in the trailer was the equivalent of 6,000 gallons (23,000 L) of oil and caused the fire to burn for 56 hours and reach temperatures of over 1,832°F (1,000°C). The blaze claimed 39 lives.

Earthquake Destroys Caracas, Venezuela (1812)

Caracas is the capital of Venezuela, located in the northern part of the country near the Caribbean coast. In 1811, Venezuela declared its independence from Spain, signing a declaration to that effect in Caracas on July 5. Less than a year later, the city was destroyed by an earthquake, prompting authorities to portray the disaster as divine punishment for those who rebelled against the Spanish Crown.
