For inquiring minds.

I use AndyK's Pending Credits Monitor to calculate claimed credit and time per workunit of all the computers in both farms. With these numbers and the total number of CPU's I calculated the theoretical credits per 24 hour period. I didn't use granted credits because it's rare nowadays not to get within 0.01 credits of claimed and it gives me a larger base of completed workunits to get a better average of both average credit and average time for completion. Also it takes the problem with wingman being discussed here out of the equation.

This theoretical credits per day is divided into the pending credits to get the farm time and the cache size is calculated by multiplying the average workunit time by the total number of workunits not processed yet (sum of the number of tasks per computer minus the number done) and dividing it by the number of CPUs.

Since credits per hour can be very different depending on the angle range (I remember seeing the various angle range vs credit charts that are posted here on occasion, very non linear) the theoretical credits per day number can vary depending on the mix of angle ranges. These numbers may also be skewed by the fact that granted credits last about 24 hours before being purged while pending could last for weeks.

Edit: Don't know if you are addressing me specifically or not msattler. I have an unfortunate tendency not to respond directly to any particular post but interject my opinion into the general debate.

I chose your farm since I knew you use a relatively large cache size which is quite the opposite of Mr. Robinson's, it provided a nice data point above the 64 hour average return time to compare with Mr. Robinson's farm.

It's my take as well that it really doesn't matter in the long run. I judge my contribution and ranking by credits per month according to BOINCStats. As long as I'm around 2400 per month, everything is fine and dandy (poor old PIII 800).

[quoteThe time lag is what you are all discussing.....
It just don't matter........
Cache size does NOT affect credits/day...at all......at least not in the long term......[/quote]

It only matters if your shortsighted.
