I remember this thread: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=39910 But its pretty old, and won't let me reply to it..was wondering if that project is still going? Did it ever make it out of Alpha stage? I have had a ps3 for awhile now..and just recently got back into the seti@home stage with the PC, but I would like to crunch on my ps3 for seti@home instead of folding@home.. Also, what version of Linux would be best for this project, if its still going? Does Xubuntu offer wireless for the ps3 out of the box, and sdtv support? |

I never heard anything about a working, good client for the cell processor, though there have been some slow ones that don't really use the full power of the cell. I have been running PS3Grid on my ps3, using Yellow Dog 6, there's also Yoyo, but I don't know of any others that are running so as to use the capabilities of the processor. ![]() |

I was successful at getting Boinc and Seti installed on my PS3. I used YellowDog Linux 6 and I forget the number of the Boinc client. I also used the seti application mentioned in that other thread. I let the PS3 crunch for approximately 4 hours. Boinc was still predicting 4 days to complete the work unit. Boinc only showed 2 processors. It was obvious the the full potential of the cell engine was NOT being utilized so I discontinued the experiment. [edit] There is also this thread where Seti project have officialy asked for help in porting Seti to the PS3. Don't know if anyone has responded to it. |

So ..it basically just ran 2 seti@home programs on the ps3? How fast did they go? I still might give it a try..because I only have a 1ghz computer.. Does someone have a write-up on how to install it on the ps3? That thread confused the hell outta me. |

seti use only PPEs(2) subprocessors on cell for now so power is not big ... but converting to use SPEs (6 on PS3 and 7 on Cell servers) that other .... ![]() ![]() |

So ..it basically just ran 2 seti@home programs on the ps3? How fast did they go? I still might give it a try..because I only have a 1ghz computer.. It's really not worth it for SETI as-is. It's OK for PS3Grid - I finally got around to installing YDL/BOINC on my PS3 the other night. Seems to get an RAC running PS3Grid roughly equivalent to about a q6600, I think (running a SETI AK version). It would be great if running PS3Grid, SETI or whatever on BOINC were as easy as the F@H client is on PS3, but I gather F@H got a lot of help from Sony to make that happen, and Sony aren't extending that olive branch to everyone... Can we get a word from seti about this? Has anyone replied to your thread? With just under 4,000 views..I think someone has.. If not, you might want to ask the people that run the ps3grid project..you mentioned them so you DO know about them.. I'm sure they would help..why keep that knowledge to yourself? |

A guide for installing YellowDog Linux 6.0 onto the PS3 is located here. You can install the Boinc client noted at the bottom of that article or............ The web site located here has versions of Boinc and also a Seti app that will run under YDL 6.0. Be sure and get the versions for Linux and the PS3 procesor. Good luck and let us know how you do with it! Note: The Gaurav Khanna binaries located here is not recommended since it does not make full use of the PS3 as claimed. I wonder if Gaurav Khanna has made additional effort on this since posting his message. This is everything I know about for the PS3 and Boinc/Seti. If anyone else as additional information, please post it here. Thanks. |

I don't know about anyone else, but I was unable to get the above version of Boinc running properly under YDL, it always reported the wrong platform and no one knew (or responded to my posts on the ps3grid forums, at any rate) what to do to fix that issue... -Dave ![]() |

I was able to get all the sources I quoted running on my PS3. One Seti app only reported a single processor and ran one wu, the other reported two processors and ran 2 wu. I don't remember which was which. Neither of them made use of the PS3 cell processors and both were very slow. I have since removed all including YDL 6.0 from my PS3 and am awaiting further developments for the PS3. |

I was able to get the Dotsch version of Boinc running, I just could not get any work from ps3grid as it reported the wrong platform, were you able to get work using that version of Boinc from ps3grid? -Dave ![]() |

I was able to get the Dotsch version of Boinc running, I just could not get any work from ps3grid as it reported the wrong platform, were you able to get work using that version of Boinc from ps3grid? I don't think I used the Boinc version from PS3Grid since I speculated that it was specifically for the PS3Grid project. I remeber using the Dotsch version though with the corresponding version of Seti also from his site. The Gaurav Khanna binaries contains his own version of Boinc and Seti together and they installed together. Both his version of Boinc and the Seti App seemed to be very crude, possibly his first attempt at porting to the PS3. I wish he would reappear and show us if there has been any further progress. Question: Does a processor search for the PS3 at any of the stats sites show any PS3's crunching for Seti? |

Sorry, my question was poorly stated, what I meant was: Using the Dotsch version of Boinc, could you get PS3Grid work units? Or did you not try to do this since you only wanted to use Seti? -Dave ![]() |

Ok, good to know. So as far as I know, it's still the case that one cannot use the Dotsch version of Boinc if one wants to participate in ps3grid. -Dave ![]() |

I can compile a special version, which has the platform string needed for PS3 Grid. The PPC/Power/PS3 binaries on my side are universal version which work on all Power CPU based platforms. - Btw. If you have and suggestions or (porting)wished in the future, feel free to contact me.... The SETI binary on my site also only uses the PPE, but works on several platforms. I can ask Gaurav about his progress. So far I know uses Gauravs SPE Version two SPEs per SETI application and launches three applications in parallel. So all six SPEs would be used. |

Has anyone installed Gauravs app and confirmed that it launches all these instances? I ask because this is not what I observed when I tried it. Of course I am an extreme noob with Linux and may have missed it. |

I have asked Gaurav. He said that the BOINC client starts two SETI applications which each is using three SPEs. |
