Message 761360 - Posted: 31 May 2008, 16:46:38 UTC - in response to Message 761345.

I read on the Opensolaris website that later in the year there will be A Opensolaris Sparc edition what is the difference between the two?

'Sparc edition' would be for SPARC CPUs only (a CPU developed by Sun Microsystems).

Finished downloading/burning Solaris 10. Installed on backplane. That is one damned good piece of software.

Have downloaded Boinc & I'm pretty sure it will run. It looks like I have to do what Pappa & MajorKong advised me to do some months ago when I turned to Linux.

I set permissions on the d/l'ed file & clicked on it. It created a Boinc folder & installed files. However, when I click on run manager, nothing happens. Will have to read up the documentation & FIND that thread.

I've only been using it 10 minutes & on 1st impressions, I think that MS will be departing my Server & Workstation. I might leave Bill on the desktops!

Magic - Thanks for the pointer, Michael. VERY much appreciated. I have tried numerous distros, but not found any that I felt that I could get my teeth into.

I'm pretty sure that this is one distro THAT will not be erased.

Regards

Sounds like someone won't be upgrading to Solaris 11... ;)

If I get boinc working, I will be when it's available.

@ Michael, have d/l'ed boinc x64 & all files in boinc folder. However, I can't seem to get it to run. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

We can't all be perfect. It's installed the same way that all other distro's I tried. Unfortunately, asides from the permissions, I can't see how it runs. Had I been a volunteer tester, I wouldn't be sneering, in fact, I'd be helping.

Did you install a 64 bit client onto a 32 bit Solaris 10?

When I ran it from the CD, it stated 32 bit. However on installation, it stated 64bit - installed the entire group + OEM, so I installed the 64bit.

Saved boinc to desktop, then set permissions & double clicked. It installed into boinc folder. Set permissions on the boinc.exe & no joy. I know I've missed something, but cannot recall what.

So at this time BOINC is not compatible with Opensolaris?

Not sure. Have tried various versions with each one installing into a boinc folder, but cannot get them to run.

Different file systems? You might have better luck with the Darwin version of boinc, but I'd wait for the Solaris expert to chime in since I might not know what I'm talking about... ;)

Hey! Solaris is NOT Linux.

It's a different OS.

They both share a lot of commonality, but I think you'll find that the binary APIs are very different. You'll need to at least recompile your source code.

Crunch3r is a good one to ask on that...

Good luck and happy crunchin',
Martin
