Message 797379 - Posted: 13 Aug 2008, 19:52:26 UTC - in response to Message 797250.

The V8-Xeon has now the max windows-performance-index of 5,9
see leistungsindex
Temps under full load of "Einstein" are moderate
see v8_hwmonitor
If seti has work again we will compare temps against einstein
my first einstein-wu need CPU time 35804.75 ...a lot of time for Granted credit 193.41

Nice to see you again!
Hope you feel well (better now)..

I guess the AK v8.0 app for SETI@home use the CPU more than the Einstein-app.
So because of this the CPU/s is/are hotter.

I don't know, use the Einstein-app also the SSSE3 extension?

Einstein will use up to SSE2 on Linux; SSE for Windows systems.

Summary we can say:
Einstein-----------Seti
FB-DIMM1 = 70 C | FB-DIMM1 = 94 C
FB-DIMM2 = 65 C | FB-DIMM2 = 87 C

The FB-DIMM temp increase in Seti upto 24 C, The CPU temp is not different
The FB-DIMM fans and some other run a bit quicker with seti but not too much.
The FB-DIMMS are cooled with a 2 fan OCZ memory-cooler
This are the facts.

@Francois: what are your FB-DIMM temps on the SKT ? What is recommeded to cool the FB-Dimms down a bit ?

News from the V8-Xeon:
Fedora9_x86_64 is installed now on the SKT parallel to Vista64 on the second disk.
I'm here with the Firefox 3 Beta 5 now.
There are still some additional adjustments todo, like monitorsupport and resolution. Hoping that the fonts then look a little bit better.
Any hints how to get better fonts ?

After getting some work from seti, V8-Xeon runs 50% / 50% seti / einstein.
But at this moment all 8 cores running einstein.
All values from Everest

Roomtemp = 25,5 C, humidity = 60%
Now I measured the temps over 12 hours with a good 50%/50% seti/einstein
Results you can see here

The machine is now under the desk on the bottom.. there is better aircirculation... a better place as on my desk...

wow heinz! nice setup.

1 question, what is the temperature range on those CPU's? 70+ Degrees C' is really hot

wow heinz! nice setup.

1 question, what is the temperature range on those CPU's? 70+ Degrees C' is really hot

Here is the processorspecification
see definition of thermalspecification
I believe the temp means here not the core-temp
as Everest shows some posts back
Temperaturen:
CPU1 57 °C (135 °F)
CPU2 52 °C (126 °F)
-------------------
and this is 10°C slower than thermalspec shows: Thermal Specification: 67°C
so we are in the range..
edit: here is a look into the machine

This night the last einstein wu has done. Now V8-Xeon runs 100% seti.
Have a look what I have seen this morning.
Roomtemp was 26,5 C, humidity = 60%
my FB-DIMM sensor = 70°C
my first look with CPUID-Hardaremonitor shows FB-DIMM = 98°C(I have seen 99°C,uhh)
I opened the window, roomtemp gos down to 23°C, everest shows FB-DDIMM1 = 96
Then I monitored CPUID-Hardwaremonitor, Everest, ProcessExplorer
meanwhile FB-DIMM1 goes down to 95°C, and Everest shows DIMM = 74°C
----------------------
conclusion
DIMM = 74°C
FB-DIMM1 = 95°C
FB-DIMM2 = 88°C
have a look on the fans:
CPU1 = 644 RPM
CPU2 = 647 RPM
North Bridge = 3497 RPM
South Bridge = 4268 RPM
DIMM = 2923 RPM
Aux = 941 RPM
-----------------------
Have a look into the specification of the Kingston FB-DIMM KVR667D2D4F5K2/16GB
T_Case DDR2 SDRAM device operating temperature (Ambient) MIN=0°C,MAX=95°C
AMB device operating temperature (Ambient) MIN=0°C, MAX=110°C
Note: Above 85°C DRAM case temperature the Auto-Refresh command interval has to be reduced to tREFI=3,9 microseconds
---------------------------------------
With DIMM = 74°C (if it is the Tcase temp) we are in the specification range.

As Jason already remarked: Heinz is cooking his breakfast eggs on the RAM, LoL
100%seti on all 8 cores :-)
regards

Last 2 hours 14-16 hour I monitored the temps again.
Roomtem = 23,7°C
humidity = 70%
DIMM = 71°C
FB-DIMM1 = 100°C (Everest)
Max FBDIMM1 = 101°C (CPUID HW-Monitor), it shows some crazy values in other points, have you seen this ever before ?
Have a look at FB-DIMM1 = 100°C
Although I have run seti the last two months 24/7 I had never seen this.
Perhaps is this why we now have many wu's with the same angle range...0,4

21 hour
Roomtemp = 25,7°C, humidity = 70 %
My FB-DIMM sensor = 71°C
------------------------------------
the 2 big fans are out now again. It is better because then the FB-DIMM cooler runs then faster.
Fans
FB-DIMM 2501 RPM, two big case fans on, higher FB-DIMM1 temps
FB-DIMM 3148 RPM, two big case fans off, lower FB-DIMM1 temps
if 4 cores running 70% and 4 cores are on 50%, this results in temps of 98 °C
have a look on the 98°C constellation
if the constellation is all 8 cores on same %value we have 101°C
a good mix of wu's in ar and length hold the temps down.
As I crunched 50% einstein the temps are more moderate.
------------------------
at the moment 21:30 hour I have:
FB-DIMM = 76°C
FB-DIMM1 = 97°C
FB-DIMM2 = 90°C
-------------------
wu progress in %
1%
1%
7%
49%
71%
73%
85%
99%
------------------
this means the FB-DIMM temp depends on the progress of the running wu's

11:00 hour
Roomtemp = 24.5°C
humidity = 63%
My FB-DIMM sensor = 65°C
-------------------------------
to pressure down the temps a bit, I run now seti/rosetta 50%/50%
at this moment running 5 Rosetta mini and 3 Seti wu's
Everest shows now:
DIMM = 74
FB-DIMM1 = 90
FB-DIMM2 = 83
--------------
fan DIMM = 2970 RPM

this looks better now
I dont't like to toast my FB-DIMM's ( costs 446,08 Euro )

Hi Dorsilfin,
it is built for HPC, as a developer and test machine, and for my private use.
have a look at our developer forum

V8-Xeon, different OS handling
After running 24 hours in Fedora9, Vista is now again bootable.
As you know I use "Acronis Disk Director Suite 10" to manage the different OS's.
Anyhow Fedora9 became the standard OS(made some updates via Internet).
The OS Selector was not active at this time. At next boot Fedora9 came up, but I cant not boot Vista64.
Every boot runs now into the new standard(Fedora9).
In the doku you can find:-->
If you want to activate the OS-Selector you can start from the bootable CD.
But the boot CD fails....tried several times but nothing, it did not work.....uhhh
What todo now ?
From Fedora9 I edited the file bootwiz.oss the 8th last line
<bootmgr default_os="755658994" disk_order_feature="1" /> (my Fedora)
to:
<bootmgr default_os="1077399094" disk_order_feature="1" /> (my Vista64)
At the next restart my Vista came up and I can now activate the OS-Selector again.
But one problem is open: The bootable CD did not work on this machine!!

Big attention if you deselect the OS-Selector, and you have not a already tried bootable CD....
Must always think on Murphys law...„Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong.“

Now the last wu's from the cache can go out.

This morning I found the machine shut down.
The last wu's are out now.
If nothing more has todo the machine shut down automatic.
That is very intelligent. Thanks to the developer of these chips.

Time to set up some more software and some other OS's for special tasks.
