I burned the iso and took it for a 'live' test drive where I discovered this nifty little wubi feature... The 'live' test drive was pretty nifty in itself, it reminded me of the MacOS9 days... Anyway, now that I have vista installed, this would save me the worries of having a mishap during a live repartitioning session... Has anyone tried it? Not ubuntu, but the wubi installation method... ;) (I was especially impressed with the wobbly windows effect. I know, it's just eye candy, but still.) It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . . |

Not ubuntu, but the wubi installation method... ;) Mmmm... Booting into the Linux OS with the Linux system stored as a normal Windows file anywhere on a Windows partition... Very neat idea! And very unobtrusive. The only 'install' bit is to copy one (big) file and then tweak a boot loader to let the user select to boot either Windows or Linux-in-a-file. Brilliant!! I sure bet Windows won't easily let you do that on a Linux system! (I was especially impressed with the wobbly windows effect. I know, it's just eye candy, but still.) Well, that's all "old hat" now. Still good for showing off a little, especially the desktop zoom and cube switching effects :-) Happy crunchin', Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

I am currently updating a fresh Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on my FSC ESPRIMO mobile V5535, but until now it doesnt support WLAN and only has 800x600 screen resolution :( Sorry, can't help directly for those hardware bits. Try a google search for any comments in other forums? Have you looked up you local(-ish) Linux group for your area? PS: I intend to install S@h at both machines :-) Good luck and happy crunchin'! Well that was rather simple: Defrag hard drive --> Launch wubi --> Reboot --> Watch linux install --> Reboot --> Log in... (then change the gawd awful desktop pic) Synopsis: Ubuntu has found a home inside a 15 gig file within the windows file system... Vista lost 15 gigs of drive space and found a new entry inside its bootloader... Leopard went completely untouched... I'd say wubi works quite well, even on an apple computer... ;) It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . . |

Update: wvdial got me on the internet [rolls eyes], I did my updates, got me a firewall and a GUI dialer, now I'm off to get me some KDE4... Wooohooo... ;) (Finally, a flavor of linux that even grandma can use... kudos to you, ooobuntooo.) It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . . |

using webui to install Ubuntu dose it allow you to save information to the hard drive? If you run ubuntu from the live cd, it doesn't touch your hard drive, it saves everything to ram... If you reboot, your files and settings are gone... If you install ubuntu on its own partition, then it is its own OS on its own hard drive... If you reboot, everything stays the same... If you install ubuntu using wubi, it will create and format a small partition within the existing windows file system to install itself on... Windows sees it as a file, ubuntu sees it as a partition... If you reboot, everything stays the same... The only exception would be if you messed around with the very easy to spot ubuntu file while you were in windows, ubuntu probably wouldn't appreciate that very much... ;) It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . . |

Well that was rather simple: Yuck! How can you use Windows on an Apple - when you already have Leopard on it? ;) Congratulations, now you have 2 awsome OS's on your Apple -- well, and Windows :D (Well, even if I got them for free, I wouldn't prefer Vista over MacOS - or even over Linux) Account frozen... |

(Well, even if I got them for free, I wouldn't prefer Vista over MacOS - or even over Linux) Honestly, I like them all... But my order of preference is ---> Leopard, Ubuntu, Vista... I've spent a lot of time poking around in Vista, and now I'm spending a lot of time poking around in Ubuntu, but I'll alway be attached to my Leopard... After the first 'official' release of Q, I'll never have to leave Leopard again... ;) (Unless someone succeeds in crashing my new machine. Lord knows they've been trying. Port 22 has been looking pretty darn busy as of late.) It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . . |

BTW - Ubuntu is very boinc friendly... ;) (And it doesn't require a print screen button on my keyboard either. Yes, that was a subtle poke at Microsoft.) It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . . |

I have been running Ubuntu Linux for several months now, and I like it. It was easy to install, and it has a fair number of apps that work as good as or better than the Windows equivalents. What you do today you will have to live with tonight |

I am not at all familiar with linux so I apologize if this is an obvious question. When I start Ubuntu it goes to a command prompt like screen. How do I get out of this and access the graphical GUI? I'm Sorry I haven't had that problem, so I can't answer that for you but, if you go to Ubuntu's help site they can give you the solution to that problem. Do any preceding lines state anything about a program named X or Xorg? I had similar problems using a Nvidia graphics card. You can check the community forums here. Be patient and get ready for a steep learning curve. Good Luck!! |
