I am really new at all this and am wondering a few things. First can someone tell me what the best settings to have so I can get more work done? It seems that it takes forever to do one task, and I am not sure if when I set this boink thing up, I did it right. I have had it for about a month now, and I have a little less than 200 credits. I don't leave my computer on 24/7 but its on at least 6 hours a day, and boink is the first thing I turn on after it loads up. Second, where do I get those sigs I see everyone has, that tracks your credits and stuff? Thanks for any help you can give me, I look forward to getting to know some of you soon. Sorry, Im sure these have been asked a ton, but I couldn't find anything on it. |

Welcome to the Boards, Dwayne!!! I can answer the last question..... To fetch the "BoincStats" image in peoples signatures, go to your SETI home page, and in the Cross-Project Statistics area, click on the BoincStats link, this will take you to your BoincStats page.... There, find & click on your "URL for user signature graphic" copy the link in your internet browser..... Go back to your SETI home page, click on Community preferences, and then paste the link in the Signature Box..... And then format that link by adding at the back of the link. That is your signature picture set-up.... For your first question, you can speed up and "cheat" your SETI credit (like me) by downloading and installing a program (KWSN), you may need someone else to help you with this. Best Regards, Luke. - Luke. |

I am not sure if when I set this boink thing up, I did it right. What's a boink? ;) It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . . |

I am not sure if when I set this boink thing up, I did it right. The sound a pogo stick makes when squashing ant's. ;-) |

Cool, got it to work. So without downloading anything extra, can someone tell me if what are the best settings to use with just plain old BOINC? :-p Maybe later I will try and download whatever, but for now I just want to know if I have everything set right so I get the most speed, and best performance I can get. Below is how it is set up right now. When I first downloaded BOINC, I changed some of the settings because I didnt know what I was doing. Still kind of lost, but I dont get much time to read about this stuff, and only found out about it thru a co-worker. Anyway, here is how I set it up: Processor usage Suspend work while computer is on battery power? (matters only for portable computers) yes Suspend work while computer is in use? no 'In use' means mouse/keyboard activity in last 3 minutes Suspend work if no mouse/keyboard activity in last (Needed to enter low-power mode on some computers) Enforced by version 5.10.14+ --- minutes Do work only between the hours of (no restriction) Leave applications in memory while suspended? (suspended applications will consume swap space if 'yes') no Switch between applications every (recommended: 60 minutes) 60 minutes On multiprocessors, use at most Enforced by version 5.10 and earlier 16 processors On multiprocessors, use at most Enforced by version 6.1+ 100 % of the processors Use at most (Can be used to reduce CPU heat) Enforced by version 5.6+ 100 percent of CPU time Disk and memory usage Use at most 100 GB disk space Leave at least (Values smaller than 0.001 are ignored) 0.001 GB disk space free Use at most 50% of total disk space Write to disk at most every 60 seconds Use at most 75% of page file (swap space) Use at most Enforced by version 5.8+ 50% of memory when computer is in use Use at most Enforced by version 5.8+ 90% of memory when computer is not in use Network usage Computer is connected to the Internet about every (Leave blank or 0 if always connected. BOINC will try to maintain at least this much work.) 0 days Maintain enough work for an additional Enforced by version 5.10+ 0.25 days Confirm before connecting to Internet? (matters only if you have a modem, ISDN or VPN connection) no Disconnect when done? (matters only if you have a modem, ISDN or VPN connection) no Maximum download rate: no limit Maximum upload rate: no limit Use network only between the hours of Enforced by version 4.46+ (no restriction) Skip image file verification? Check this ONLY if your Internet provider modifies image files (UMTS does this, for example). Skipping verification reduces the security of BOINC. no |

Cool, got it to work. Some of these options matter more on some projects than others. But for SETI (and others), until you can decide otherwise, you might like to change these options;
