Luke : It has been proven that the list of primes goes on to infinity. So even the largest prime found can be added to to find the next one. The Japanese Ran their super computer for 600 hours and found something like the 600,000 th prime or so I remember. The answer would be infinity and then beyond infinity as much as you like. |

When I say:
I mean: take a number (say 3) and prove it's prime, e.g. divide it into 2,3,5,7 and show how (long division or any division strategy) it doesn't go in. Other than infinity. So one person might take 5 and show how it's prime, and then someone else will take 7 and show how it's prime. Get what I mean??? Luke. - Luke. |

OK--Here's my answer. The reason I like understanding math is to avoid hard work of calculating. I would take the list of all known prime numbers and multiply them all together. I would then add 1 to this resultant product. This new number would be prime since division by any number would always yield a remainder of 1. There you go !! I claim a foul if anyone tries to use my new prime number to win this point. Do you think that I can get the no-belly prize for this ?? |

OK--Here's my answer. The reason I like understanding math is to avoid hard work of calculating. Objection, M'Lud. Prime numbers are, by definition, odd numbers (as opposed to even numbers - not "odd" as in "strange" though they may be that too :) Multiply all known prime numbers together and you will end up with an odd number; then add 1 and you have an even number - divisible by 2 and therefore not prime. Back to the drawing board? (Pun not intended but perhaps appropriate anyway ;)) F. |

Au contraire mon Herr I did not claim that the product of the primes was odd. You forget that 2 is prime so this "product of all known primes" would have to be even--adding one would make it odd AND prime. QED "ne pas?"
