I finally got a computer that won't make me look shameful in the speed stats (The last one was so slow that it took aver a week to process one WU!). After a dozen WUs using SETI@home's GUI, I installed the text-only version (146% faster than the GUI). I had no problems using it under Terminal and xterm (via X11.app).

Now I've updated to the BOINC/SETI, and can't tell whether or not it's running. All I get is 2004-09-20 20:40:57 [---] Resuming computation and network activity.

How can I tell if BOINC/SETI is running? My CPU-meter is at 100% activity, but how do I know if it's actually doing something? Do I need to run the SETI@home GUI app after running boinc? (Or did I read correctly where it said "Don't run both simultaneously"?)

Or is it running and I haven't looked in the right places?
PowerBook 3,5  866MHz  768MB  X.3.5 (7M34) |

Hi NeoAmsterdam, open activity monitor from Applications/Utilities and select "CPU". If you see lots of blue BOINC/SETI is running. |

PowerBook 3,5  > 866MHz  768MB  X.3.5 (7M34) > > Theoretically yes. In reality blue shows NICE-processes. If your system hang you would see lots of red. So, unless you experience a very unlikely case of a process crashing and doing so as a NICE process you are right. In most other cases it is a good indication of BOINC running. BTW: SETI Classic shows 90-95% Green. |

I guess my problem is that I'm so used to seeing a progress bar or using cat state.sah | grep "prog"to know that the WU is being worked on. It's really difficult to rationalize "If it hasn't crashed, then it is working" when you don't see or hear any output...
|

I see you have a PowerBook, Neo, so are a fellow 'Maccie'! I've just posted a reply on the thread 'Nothing happening?' in the Mac section about third party software SETI Control. Hope this helps! |

"I see you have a PowerBook, Neo, so are a fellow 'Maccie'!"

Please don't call me "Neo" – It belittles me to be equated with a bunch of wannabe script kiddies. No offesne taken.

"I've just posted a reply on the thread 'Nothing happening?' in the Mac section about third party software SETI Control."

Just finished reading it, and I'll se if it is worth it. Still, it would have been nice if (at least) there was a file like /var/log/boincin order get some kind of evidence of fruitful activity... [nudge, nudge, wink, wink]
|

No offesne taken.
Apologies for that. I don't delve into the world of script kiddies (or their wannabes), so was unaware of any connotations in shortening your name. >Still, it would have been nice if (at least) there was a file like > /var/log/boincin order get some kind of evidence of fruitful > activity... [nudge, nudge, wink, wink]
SETI Control has a sort of log window which has to be refreshed, but I think it may just be the raw data for the statistics which update in real time. Just looked at your profile and see you quote the late, great Douglas Adams. You might be interested to know that here in the UK the BBC is treating us to a new radio version of the next part of The Hitchikers Guide following on from the original series that went out all those years ago and started it all. Wonderful stuff! |

No offense taken. It's just that by the time people get to say "Amsterdam" they're overwhelmed by linking "Neo", myself, and the Matrix, and just stop typing/speaking/thinking... Again, no offense was taken.

I tried SETI Control, and I think I know where the problem might be: I put a BOINC/SETI link in /usr/bin/boinc409and call it from there since it's in the PATH variable, but I haven't the least notion where the executable is.

I'll try hunting it down. It's very likely that I may have misplaced, renamed, or divorced files without realizing it. When all else fails, clean install.

As for the BBC's HHGTTG, I missed the first one. They'll rebroadcast on Thursday at 11GMT (Whether it's AM/PM I don't know).

Final score: Sub-Etha, 42; RealMedia 10; Reception in New York via BBC World Service; 0.
|

In the boinc directory there is a file 'client_state.xml'. This has all the work units that are available. Near the bottom of the file is the line: (fraction_done) 0.0000 (/fracton_done) the zeroes being how far along the current work unit is. *** The open/close round brackets, should be open closed angle brackets. The forums removes angle brackets, so i had to remove them. *** So the 0.0000 increasing, will indicate you are doing work |

Sorry I haven't been online in a while... I just checked client_state.xml and lo and behold, I do not find it at all. cat client_state.xml | grep "frac" returned , , and , whatever they are.

I ran BOINC-ed SETI for at least 25 hours before wondering if anything was happening. I'm assuming that if BOINC/SETI hasn't got a tag, then it never did any work in the first place -- Does that sound plausible?

As soon as standard SETI finishes this WU, I'll remove all of the BONIC and SETI files and do a clean install. Maybe that'll fix it.
|
