I just noticed that recently, "volunteer tester" has appeared under my name in the forums. I have not gotten a private message or email with news of this. Does anyone know why?

It is because you have run SETI Beta. That's all...

Thanks!
(didn't know that that would do that, but it makes me feel special being a volunteer tester!)

I have never run SETI Beta. [edit] at least not consciously ;-)[/edit]
Is there another way I could have become a tester?

Did you run BOINC Alpha?

I doubt that I ever ran BOINC alpha, as I'd never heard of BOINC 'till a couple months before SETI Classic shut down and I switched over.

I guess that it's possible that I attached to SETI Beta once upon a time when SETI had no work. Can't really recall.

Thanks,
John

This has happened in reverse on SETI Beta a few times where people have not got their Volunteer tester tags when they did participate in Beta.

See http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/beta/forum_thread.php?id=296 and http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/beta/forum_thread.php?id=1073 for some examples of this.

Would running any beta or alpha project, like QCN alpha or malariacontrol.net beta also make you show up as a volunteer tester ?

I'm not JDwhale, but I'll answer that. No it wouldn't on this project. SETI@Home and SETI/ASTROPULSE Beta are under the same roof, same team of folks. The other projects are not part of SETI. However, some of the other projects do list volunteer tester under your user name. Just depends on the project if they enable that feature.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for being my wingman on this Blu Dude. Taking a closer look at BoincStats, I did find out that I attached my laptop to SETI Beta some time ago (Probably partying it up in Las Vegas when I ran out of SETI work, explains why I can't remember:-) Can't find where I ever did any work for the project though. The project probably didn't have any work to distribute when I tried :-( Maybe just attaching and trying to download work is enough to get the "Volunteer tester" tag. Seems like the tag is cheap enough, almost like getting something for nothing.

Does anybody know how I can find out if I ever completed any SETI Beta WU's?

Sure, browse to the SETI Beta site, click on "Your account" and check what you've done. The project keeps all results so you can even see details of a task. You may have to log in, hopefully you used your normal email and can guess what password you chose.

Thanks, Josef. Just as I thought, "Total Credit 0", never did any work for the project. Guess it was just my good looks that earned me "Volunteer tester" status. On the other hand, it might have my entertaining of the troops (picking up the bar tab) that earned me a pass ;-)

Probably just creating the account did it.
