When your computer is doing the work, there is a little line that says credit and has a number value affixed to it. What is that?

Probably the same number you see under your name beside your message, right? See the BOINC FAQ, “What are credits? …”, near the middle of section 1. There you will find links to related pages from the Unofficial BOINC Wiki.
