Very important, a multi-tasking machine - helped to sell the idea to the wife. Although it is only running at 55C, so not pumping out a great amount at the minute.

Dual 2Ghz PowerPC G5
400 MHz PowerPC G4 (MAXpowr G4 upgrade on Beige PowerMac G3)
MacBookPro 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo
533 MHz PowerPC G4
667 MHz PowerPc G4 (Titanium G4 PowerBook)

And confined to museum:

Macintosh Plus 1MB
Macintosh SE/30
Apple ][ (64KB memory upgraded from original 16KB)

How things have changed over the years!
All run SETI alone, excepting MacBookPro (running Climate Prediction alone).
The museum items are inactive, but the Plus and SE/30 used to happily run Classic SETI with RAM Disk.

Hmmm....

I'm not much of a Machead, although my Mom loves her iMac but isn't too interested in coughing up the cake for a new one. ;-)

You know offhand if the G4 upgrade you have in the PowerMac is doable on an iMac?

I'm running a mac pro 8-core with 8gb ram :-) its sitting at number 11 in the fastest machines list

i use it for video editing , 3d modelling and rendering , music production, and my general business communications interweb and for watching tv and films...lol and it still crunches seti in the background apart from when I am rendering in final cut pro or lightwave

oh yes it keeps my room warm too :-)

these machines are flippin amazing if you ask me... I bet few of the highest pc seti machines are multitasking to the same extent

oh yes i have a graveyad of various old macs including a screenless powerbook i use as a 24/7 web server running tiger server.... usefull half machines that my work fixing macs provide :-)

regards

adrian

ps look to my link for running optimised seti crunchers on your macs (shamless plug)

LOL...

Yep, I saw you had zoomed back up to the top of the heap again a little while back.

<edit> I also see you're like me, I usually don't retire machines until they have an MB burnout! ;-)

1ghz eMac - 1GB Ram
July 2005 until November 2007
Work unit would take about 9 1/2 hours (just about 2 1/2 work units per day)

2.8ghz core 2 extreme platinum iMac - 4GB Ram
November 2007 until 2 days ago
Work unit would take about 2 1/2 hours (2 processor cores allowed for about 20 work units per day)

3.0ghz 8 core mac pro - 9GB Ram
2 days ago until now
Work unit takes about 1 1/4 hours or less (8 processor cores allow for about 150+ work units per day)

Macbook 2ghz, intel core duo running several boinc projects mainly seti 12hrs/day. If it was going 24/7 I wouldn't be able to sleep.
Powerbook G4, 1ghz ppc also running several boinc projects but mainly seti. It is also my webserver, and crunches 24/7 as it isn't so noisy.
These machines keep my room nice and toasty when there's a wind chill of -30oF here in wisconsin!

Help build the seti city!

A bit of an assortment here:

One dual-core 2.3-GHz G5 (PPC 970) “Cypher” — my home system
One 733-MHz G4 (PPC 7410) “Clockwork” — my primary system at work

Two 2.16-GHz Core 2 Duo (T7400) iMacs
One dual 833-MHz G4 (PPC 7455) “P57”
Two 400-MHz G4s (PPC 7400) “Sawtooth”, “Mystic”

I have a variety of non-BOINC-capable systems at home, ranging from an Apple ][+ (MOS 6502, 48 kiB RAM) to a G4/400. The latter crunches for Evolution@home.

Could be.
It is suitable to upgrade "both beige and blue & white" desktop G3 Macs.
BUT........
Newer Technology is a supplier of upgrades and peripherals for the Apple Macintosh computer. They went bankrupt at the end of 2000 and the company was dissolved, but the name and remaining intellectual property was bought afterwards and used by a new owner.
As of 2006, they continue to supply Macintosh and iPod accessories.

I've still got the box for the MAXpowr G4, and the replaced G3 chip in it.
I'm not so sure that the iMac G3 was around, otherwise the compatibility thereof would have been mentioned. And I don't think the currently existing company still does upgrades of this type.

17" iMac with a 1GHz G4...the "iLamp"

Now that my brother has replaced his Sage iMac DV+ (450MHz G3) with a brand-new 24" iMac, I've got to get him crunching!

And there might be a MacBookPro on my shopping list soon.

OK, thanks. I was aware that Newer Technologies was kaput, but I can always keep an eye out for the G4 'PowerPack on eBay.

I guess the only real problem would be if there was enough physical space in the iMac to accommodate the new processor package. iMacs have always been pretty 'Dense Pack' in their packaging, but I'm going to be opening my Mom's up soon to stuff a bigger HDD and DVD/RW into it, so I'll be able to get a feel for the 'lay of the land'.

One other question. I recently upgraded it to Panther and would like to set him up on Leiden (which is a good project to run on old timers), but am having trouble due to some dylib problems with GLUT. Unfortunately, most of the guys who hang out regularly on their boards know even less about OS X than I do, so any pointers on getting Panther updated to something more recent would be appreciated. ;-)

Alinator

<edit> @ QSilver: LOL...

iLamp... Good one! They always reminded me of some of the modern art Lydia's mom had in 'Beetlejuice'. :-)

It is the "MAXpowr G4 ZIF" to be exact and I bought mine 25th April 2000. I broke a pin on installation and had it replaced without question, which, I suppose, was lucky as it was then that they went bust!!

I would point out that there was a serious warning accompanying the installation instructions. The VRM (Voltage Regulator Module) could permanently damage the G4 chip if it is one of the older versions on a larger brown circuit board. The later and compatible versions have shorter green circuit boards. So, beware if you do happen to get your hands on a MAXpowr G4 ZIF. Should you need any pictorial information, contact mew on Private Message to save cluttering up this thread.

I get somewhat fed up with all the feline OSX names, but Panther was OSX 10.3, and I was unable (or lacked sufficient patience) to progress beyond OSX 10.2.8 on my Beige G3 despite the G4 upgrade. I did try by downloading XPostFacto and getting details from http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter, but did not persevere. You will no doubt know that an iMac with a CD tray, OSX 10.3 has to be installed on a partition that's within the first 8 GB of the Hard Disk. However, a visit to the above link will give plenty of useful information and options available.
