A sweet little tweak for you XP and Vista users...Try it, I liked it. I got an extra 2-300 KB/s DL out of it, and best of all, free! Just a regedit... [edit: don't forget to reboot] http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb878127.aspx |

Does it matter what service pack you are running for this to work? I run SP2 on XP, but it shouldn't. |

Edit: You do not state what you changed to improve the network transfers... That would have made more sense... TechNet: "..... In the years since Windows 2000 was released, there have been many changes to networking bandwidth, including more prevalent use of high-bandwidth and wireless links..... This article describes the following performance enhancements: Receive window auto-tuning Compound TCP Enhancements for wireless traffic Improved routing path detection and recovery There is also third party software available that tweaks the settings in Windows. They don't do everything described in this article but there are settings that improve surfing speeds and downloads. TuneUp Utilities is third party software that does this. Just look near the bottom of the page. |

TuneUp Utilities is third party software that does this. Just look near the bottom of the page. Ever since a "Registry Cleaner"-type product (I forget which one) zapped my registry key for Visual Studio 6 Enterprise Edition, turning VB6 Enterprise Edition into Learning Edition (no ADO support), I have not been too keen on using any other such tool. Norton WinDoctor has some stuff like that in it and when I run it (seldom), I manually look at the registry changes to make sure that the usual default action (delete the key) is the correct action to take. Most of the time, it is not... |

I've been using the info/tools on this site: DSLReports.com for tweaking my internet connections. Works like a charm. Start with the TweakTest then download DRTCP and make adjustments as recomended from the test. The "DRTCP" tweak program is free. Been using it for both ADSL and Cable in Windows 2K and XP since 2001. (No tweaks needed in Vista) Kiva Greetings from Norway Crunch3er & AK-V8 Inside |

TuneUp Utilities is third party software that does this. Just look near the bottom of the page. It's happened to me a few times as well when I was using XP, so I avoid using registry, memory, and other so-called "system optimizers". The particular network optimizer in TuneUp is the only option I've used in that program that didn't cause noticable problems. |

Edit: You do not state what you changed to improve the network transfers... That would have made more sense... Well, there were 2 reg entries to be modified in the article, window size and window scaling. Most people seem to have tweaked window size, but not the scaling. If you haven't, a very good app for TCP/IP paramaters is SG TCP Optimizer. You can find it here: http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php. Use it first and reboot. Then change the window scaling in the registry. Reboot again and your done. |

I've been using the info/tools on this site: DSLReports.com for tweaking my internet connections. It's a nice and helpful way for someone to speed up an internet connection. It would've been good if there were some tweaks for vista as well. I'm using Vista and can tell you that my internet surfing seems to be slower than what it should be for my moderately high down/up speed. |
