Are the BOINC daemon and the GUI running on the same gentoo box? I discovered that is the daemon and the gui are running as the same user, then no password is needed. If they are running as different users, then I have to connect to localhost and supply the password.

Root may start the service, but the boinc script should actually run the daemon as the boinc user or someone else.

Try this command:
grep BOINCUSER /etc/rc.d/init.d/boinc

If root is indeed the daemon user, then you need to change that! You can change BOINC to run as your user account if you wish.

well, i dont think i get u, man,
/etc/init.d/boinc would have to always be ruled by root, ai?
Beside that i used to have this configuration on my previous gentoo install with no problem...
and why to search for BOINCUSER in that file? i mean can you be a bit more specific?
thanx a ton ...

Yes, the script file /etc/init.d/boinc is run by root. However, the daemon started by that script file should run as a different user, preferably your user account.

Anyway, I'm glad it works now for you. Perhaps that was too much detail for your setup.
