Hello

I am very new to Set@home and have recently moved to Boinc. My computer is happily chomping project data, but its a little slow compared to the big rigs you folks have.

That being said, I am very enthusiastic about the Boinc version of Seti@home.

Can anyone suggest an optimal amount of virtual memory to allocate?

Currently my prefs are set up to allocate no more than 20% of Virt mem and to use no more than 10Gigg of Hd drive space.

My puter specs are:

P4 (1.9 ghz)
256 RAM
40 GG HD (about 26 gig is taken up with software)

I play a lot of computer games liek UT2003 and this seems to stop BOINC from processing altogether, tho it continues after I finish playing.

Would really appreciate if anyone can recommend an optimal setting so thyat BOINC is processed as fast as possible.

Your computer is not all that slow.

That is more than sufficient. SETI@Home is just like the old version, it does not use that much memory. You are only running one process, and one work unit at a time, so there is little need for virtual memory.

By design, BOINC, SETI@Home, SETI@Home classic run at low priority and so will only run when there is nothing else that needs CPU time.

Most of the time this is seemless and yo never notice it switching in and out.

At the moment, there is little else that you can do to get faster processing.

Am trying to get some more RAM. Not sure if this will help, but I need more than 256 anyway!

Jb,

You can click my signature and get into all the stuff I have written so far, though it is always in need of repair...

More RAM will help, these days I don't do a PC with less than 512 if I can help it (which I usually can) ...Moree ram will help especially if you start to get into multiple projects.

Some notes:

"Every" PC game takes 100% of CPU, so even if you have fast CPU it will stop working on SETI when are you playing.

I don't use virtual memory at all, 1GB of RAM is enough for me and Windows XP Prof doesn't need any swapfile to play with slow (comparing to RAM) memory store - harddrive. Even games like Doom3 doesn't need more then 1GB.

More memory doesn't do any effect on SETI crunching. What makes sense is faster processor and fast memory. I have fast processor but slow memory :o( bad luck.
