recently (in the last ten days) I have been getting quite a few 100% computation errors. Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this?

This can have a wide variety of causes:

1) Overheating - clean out the dust bunnies.
2) Over ambitious overclocking (I don't know if you are overclocked or not).
3) Overheating (if you have done the above and it is still too hot) use the BOINC CPU usage fraction.
4) Bad component - RAM, CPU, or Hard Disk.
5) The wrong version of a BOINC optomized application.

I don't overclock, cooling isn't a problem several fans inside unit and near cpu, o/heating isn't an option, as for a bad component i'm having bsod on vista but this I believe is caused by nvidia drivers for my 8800gtx 768. I also am not using the optimized version as I have a quad core system. Just got a comp error on the following wu 30/10/2007 23:10:36|SETI@home|Reason: Unrecoverable error for result 10fe07af.17365.87499.13.6.217_1 ( - exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005))

Where is your BOINC directory? Is it perhaps in c:\\Program Files?

Boinc path as follows:C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\projects\\setiathome.berkeley.edu

OK, found your problem (BTW, the BOINC directory in your case is c:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\. The rest is the path to some info about S@H.

Vista and BOINC 5.x do not get along that well. The problem is that BOINC writes into its directory during normal execution. Vista does not allow writing to any directory under c:\\Program Files\\BOINC without elevated privileges. Even giving yourself admin privileges does not work as normally an admin only has normal user rights - it is just easier to elevate the rights.

To install BOINC under vista and have it work you have two choices.

1) Disable UAC. This also disables much of the added security.
2) Install BOINC as a SERVICE into c:\\BOINC. Installing as a service removes the prompt at startup. Installing into c:\\BOINC allows BOINC to write into its own directory.
(There is a third option to wait until BOINC V6 is ready, but that is likely to be months).

To implement option 2:
1) Uninstall BOINC.
2) Move the entire directory tree c:\\Program Files\\BOINC to c:\\BOINC. I mean all the contents of c:\\Program Files\\BOINC and all sub directories.
3) Install BOINC into c:\\BOINC.
