Setting up an older box (PIII 1.0 g) with Ubuntu 7.10 and trying to install BOINC. Install appears to run OK but when I open the nanager I get the message Authorization failed connecting to running client. Make sure you start this program in the same directory as teh client. Then in the manager I am unable to selct computer. Any ideas? |

You need to start first the BOINC client with "./run_client" or "./boinc" and then connect with the BOINC manager to the client. |

Did you install it using the script from the boinc website or through apt/synaptic? If you install it through apt, it should have a menu entry in Applications -> Accessories that should "just work" A member of The Knights Who Say NI! Another Linux noob here... I've got BOINC running as a daemon under Xubuntu 7.10, 64bit. The apt installed version 5.10.8. 1) How can I confirm that the BOINC client installed is 64b or would apt-get have insured that? I've got a couple project level problems with QMC, E@H, WCG and Lieden are crashing at WU start. Other projects seem to be running fine (ABC, SIMAP, 'skeeter control, RCN, R-Sieve, Rossetta & SETI) One thing I remember reading someplace was that it required a newer version (although I don't recall what version) of client and server software for projects to send the 32-bit app when needed. To that end, and generally just to get this machine up closer to the version on my windows machines, I downloaded boinc_5.10.21_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh. Unfortunately I'm such a noob that I don't know what to do with it from here. 2) What do I do with this downloaded .sh file? All help appreciated. Thanx, Skip |

Did you install it using the script from the boinc website or through apt/synaptic? If you install it through apt, it should have a menu entry in Applications -> Accessories that should "just work" That appears to start the GUI manager not the boinc core client and maybe that's all it starts because I modified my boinc-client file to include the "--daemon" option. At least in my Linux noob setup I have to start the client first. |

The Command "file boinc_client" would do the job. Also, there would be a message at the start of the BOINC client about the platform string which shows which client is installed.
I have looked at your results, you need to install the 32 Bit compatibitliy package that it work - this libs are not installed per default : http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?language=1&view=280&sessionID=8d387ed143c02d937af7a3fb9fb198aa At Leiden there is the libstdc++ library missing, you need to install the gcc Libraries package, too.
There is a install howto at the inoffical BOINC wiki : http://boinc-wiki.ath.cx/index.php?title=Installing_The_BOINC_Client_Software_on_Linux |

Don't think that's right - AFAIR nothing needs to be modified if you've installed the package built for your distribution via apt-get etc. and when starting the GUI manager from the menu, the client will also be started if necessary. Try to back-track your modifications (or re-install) - once you've started the GUI part and have successfully used it to join a project, running 'ps ax' from a terminal prompt should show the client chugging away. To err is human; to moo, bovine. |
