I need help yet again. I know I've successfully attached to the project, but -update_prefs setiurl doesn't seem to update and nothing gets downloaded. I'm pretty sure the necessary seti servers are up and running. I'm at a loss. I'm posting output below. Any thoughts? # /BOINC/boinc5.4.9i686_sol10 -dir ./BOINC -update_prefs http://setiathome.berkeley.edu -allow_remote_gui_rpc -return_results_immediately 2007-10-17 22:38:04 [---] Starting BOINC client version 5.4.9 for i386-pc-solaris 2007-10-17 22:38:04 [---] libcurl/7.15.5 OpenSSL/0.9.8c zlib/1.1.4 2007-10-17 22:38:04 [---] Data directory: /BOINC 2007-10-17 22:38:04 [SETI@home] Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform 2007-10-17 22:38:04 [---] Processor: 1 i86pc pentium_pro+mmx 2007-10-17 22:38:04 [---] Memory: 502.87 MB physical, 0 bytes virtual 2007-10-17 22:38:04 [---] Disk: 4.44 GB total, 331.74 MB free 2007-10-17 22:38:04 [SETI@home] URL: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/; Computer ID: 3916087; location: home; project prefs: home 2007-10-17 22:38:04 [---] No general preferences found - using BOINC defaults 2007-10-17 22:38:04 [---] Remote control allowed 2007-10-17 22:38:04 [---] Listening on port 31416 Any help at all would be appreciated. The command should look something more like this: ./boinc_cmd --host localhost:31416 --passwd password --project http://setiathome.berkeley.edu update ...where password is your gui rpc password. If you need a list of commands, try ./boinc_cmd --help If that doesn't help, post your BOINC version and the exact commands you are trying. |

The command should look something more like this: I've gotten Boinc to work on Solaris 10 x86 in the past and I've never used the command formats you mention. However, I'll give it a try and see what happens. As you can see from my post above, I am using Boinc client version 5.4.9 (as compiled by Stephan Urbat) and Seti@home client 5.13. The commands I used are also listed above, namely /BOINC/boinc5.4.9i686_sol10 (name of the executable) -dir /BOINC (installation directory) -update_prefs http://setiathome.berkeley.edu (doesn't appear to work as it has in the past) -allow_remote_gui_rpc (not really necessary for me yet) -return_results_immediately (personal preference) Thanks for the quick reply BTW. [edit] Just to let you know also, I am using an Intel 2.8 processor, which is why I selected this package from Urbat's website, as opposed to more updated amd64 Packages that he has available. As I expected, this weas the result of your suggestions. # ./boinc_cmd --host localhost:31416 --passwd ****** --project http://setiathome.berkeley.edu update So i figured, let me give it a chance and put in the full path to the Boinc directory # ./BOINC/boinc_cmd --host localhost:31416 --passwd ****** --project http://setiathome.berkeley.edu update Thanks for trying to help though.. I'm pretty sure I've got the commands right, I'm just not sure if I missed something. In addition, obviously, the "./boinc_cmd --help" command was not going to work, so I ran the following instead. Hope this helps you to help me. # /BOINC/boinc5.4.9i686_sol10 -help |

It looks like your system is not right attached to the project. Could you please start the BOINC client with "./boinc_client -update_prefs http://setiathome.berkeley.edu". What happens if you detach and reattach with "./boinc_client -attach_project http://setiathome.berkeley.edu $ACCOUNT_KEY" -> change $ACCOUNT_KEY in the account key you get mailed from the project. I am not shure it the gui_rpc option haning the client. Eventualy it works if you add to the commands above the option "-no_gui_rpc". |

Good point. I see you're running an older version of BOINC. They change the command line parameters each major release. I was looking at the 5.8.x release because that's what I have. The commands that Dotsch quoted above should work. Else, I would try his suggestion to detach/reattach. Failing that, stop BOINC, delete all the XML files in the BOINC folder, restart the daemon, and attach from that point. |

It looks like your system is not right attached to the project. Could you please start the BOINC client with "./boinc_client -update_prefs http://setiathome.berkeley.edu". Sorry for the delay in replying. I reinstalled Solaris due to screen resolution problems after I updated the OS. They remain, but I now have a workable screen. This is al besides thepoint so I will not bother you with it. I again attached to Seti@home and received the following message: /BOINC/boinc5.4.9i686_sol10 -dir /BOINC -attach_project http://setiathome.berkeley.edu 7c8bd724707fabbf4c4a637c4320d34a -allow_remote_gui_rpc -return_results_immediately As you can see, the last line states I successfully attached, but no workunits downloaded. What happens if you detach and reattach with "./boinc_client -attach_project http://setiathome.berkeley.edu $ACCOUNT_KEY" -> change $ACCOUNT_KEY in the account key you get mailed from the project. I tried that and received the following message: /BOINC/boinc5.4.9i686_sol10 -dir /BOINC -detach_project http://setiathome.berkeley.edu Still no work. As for your suggestion below, please note I did not ask for "-allow_remote_gui_rpc". Still same result of no downloads, however, I note that there *is* a command, as you said for "-NO_remote_gui_rpc". So I will try that next. Please note that in the past this command had never been a problem, but regardless I will try it as you say. /BOINC/boinc5.4.9i686_sol10 -dir /BOINC -attach_project http://setiathome.berkeley.edu 7c8bd724707fabbf4c4a637c4320d34a -no_gui_rpc Again, no work is downloaded. Did you notice that each time I detach, I get a segmentation violation? Is this related? I don't believe it should matter in this case since I am detaching... I am not shure it the gui_rpc option haning the client. Eventualy it works if you add to the commands above the option "-no_gui_rpc". I will leave it running for more than the 2 minutes I have been patient for and advise you if any change. In the meantime, please feel free to let me know if you or anyone else have any suggestions... Thanks again. Jack |

I just also wanted to mention that I find it interesting that "-update_prefs <url> doesn't seem to work. The project consistently tells me: 2007-10-17 22:38:04 [---] No general preferences found - using BOINC defaults just a note. Jack |

I again attached to Seti@home and received the following message: Due a bug in the BOINC client 5.4.9 the complete projects/setiathome... directory would be deleted if the -attach_project option would be used. This caused all your last tried to get no work. So you need now to stop the BOINC client and install or copy the SETI application into the /BOINC/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu directory. Then start cd into the BOINC directory (/BOINC) and start the BOINC client again with "./boinc_client -update_prefs http://setiathome.berkeley.edu"
I would recommend you to cd into the BOINC directory and then start the BOINC client. |

I just also wanted to mention that I find it interesting that "-update_prefs <url> doesn't seem to work. It is ok. It means that you have not setup customized preferences and you are using the default preferences. |

You may need to implement the anonymous platform solution in order to have it download work. I'm not sure where the list of supported platforms for SETI are, but I'm pretty confident that SETI supports Solaris on x86. You'll need to create an app_info.xml file in your project folder. Can someone verify that? And so what the platform string should be: i386-pc-solaris or something else? |

I again attached to Seti@home and received the following message: Yes, I realized that and restored the contents of the folder. Still no joy.
Unfortunately, before I could try this, I *re*-reinstalled the OS because, if you look above, you'll see I only had about 25 MB free on the root directory. I figured, this *must* be the reason I'm not getting work, there's just no room! So I reinstalled and manually configured the slices. This time, out of an 80GB HD, 60GB are reserved for the root directory, so I should have more than enough to download and crunch work. Unfortunately, I still have the same problem. No work is downloaded. So... I tried what you suggested and cd-ed into the /BOINC directory. The result follows: # pwd As you can see, still no joy. I can't imagine what can be going wrong! |

I *am* using the anonymous platform and have an app_info.xml file. And it *is* being seen, please check my posts above to see what the Seti@Home feedback is. I do not think this is the problem. I can post the contents of the file if you think it might be helpful. In fact: <app_info> Jack |

Your app_info.xml file looks good. And you have this file: setiathome-5.13.i386-pc-solaris ...in folder BOINC/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu/ ? Sorry, I'm out of ideas because other posts say that should work: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=33837 |

There are a lot of Unixes supported by volunteer ports. They are listed at the offical Berkeley third party site boinc.berkeley.edu/download_other.php. |

As you can see, still no joy. I can't imagine what can be going wrong! Sorry, forgot to try that. I tried that now: # cd /BOINC As you can see I got less of a reply than usual - it suggests it is no longer "listening" Jack |

Your app_info.xml file looks good. And you have this file: Thank for your help anyway. At least you tried to assist, and I appreciate that. Yes, the file is located in the projects directory within the setiathome.berkeley.edu folder. I will check out that thread as well. Jack |

I am not sure I understand what you mean by this. I think you mean that I should give up and try a diffrent flavor of Unix. If that is what you are suggesting, then I don't think I can do that. I'm only interested in Solaris at the moment as a Unix (other than Mac debate-ably) and as such, I always like to try the latest version of things, so I wouldn't be interested in Sol 8 or 9 to try this on. Also, the challenge of getting this to work is a lure in and of itself. It has worked before.. why not now? I did upgrade the hardware, might this be a problem? (by hardware, I mean a built a new-faster box. I went from a 1.7 Ghz Intel P4 to a 2.8 Intel P4. would the app or client have a problem with this? Is there some change that it might have a problem with that I might be overlooking? In otherwords, would more modern hardware in general cause this app to fail? I guess I could always try to find an AMD to use, since that seems to be Mr. Urbat's proc of choice, but I don't have one at the moment. If I did, I would be using the latest version of Mr. Urbat's clients and apps. As it stands, these are the only compilations that he has done for intel (unless I am mistaken). Anyway, thanks for all your help, and I will continue to work on this to get it to work. If I find an answer, I will post. If you or anyone else has an idea, I will be more than willing to try it. I look forward to more ideas soon. Warm regards Jack |

I will check out that thread as well. Wow... I already knew about this thread, you'll notice towards the end I started posting as well... I was such an idiot. It's apparent I didn't know what I was talking about. I still don't know either! Lol |
