The easiest way I found to get BOINC running all the time on Ubuntu was to first install the 5.4-11 boinc-client and boinc-manager version via Synaptic Pkg Mgr.

This puts the executables in /usr/bin and the client files in /var/lib/boinc-client, with the startup files in /etc/init.d.

Stop the client as it auto starts after this install.

Then, dl and "install" the latest BOINC version, which will put files in a local BOINC directory. I then copy the new binaries (boinc_client, boinc_cmd, boincmgr) from this local directory to /usr/bin after copying the original files to another name.

If you're not Linux-literate, this probably doesn't make much sense, but if you are, you should have all you need to get started.

With the startup scripts supplied, this means that BOINC runs on boot and you don't even have to login to the machine!

I use BOINCview to monitor all my machines, and have to do some additional steps to allow BOINCview to access each BOINC install, but even that's minimal to allow remote monitoring.

Did not find the Synaptic Pkg Mgr. Is this an additional program that I will have to install or is it located on the install CD?

Use whatever software installer you prefer. This could by Synaptic, apt, or even dpkg. In my install, in the GUI, Synaptic is under the "System" pull-down, under Administration.

apt is good if you like to do it from the command line.

Thanks, honestly I meant the WIKI to install SETI / BOINC and clients under a Linux OS. In my memory there was something like that in the past. Could be of help for MatthewL...

If you use Ubuntu 7.04 you surely want to buy the following book :

Hacking Ubuntu - Neal Krawetz - Wiley Publishing Inc - ISBN 978-0-470-10872-7

It makes Ubuntu behave as YOU want, contains serious hacks, mods ans customizations... It helped me on a lot of occasions, for instance to get a printer running coupled on an XP box via the network and printing from the Linux boxes without much hassle.

To my knowledge, there's no new version available via Synaptic. But as I said in my original note:

To upgrade to v 5.8.16 (or really to 5.10.8, which is the latest), you download the .tar.gz file from the BOINC site to your "local" directory. Unpack it, or have "Archive Mgr" open it when it downloads, and then extract the binaries (or executables) to a local directory. Stop the BOINC client. Then copy those new files (boinc_client, boincmgr, boinc_cmd) to the /usr/bin directory. Then restart the boinc-client. You'll now be running the new version.

I installed Boinc from the Synaptic package manager the other day, and BoincView indicates that I am running Version 5.8.13.
