Rover T3 gas turbine prototype

The decision was finally made to develop a P5 model as a small car. But all that changed when Maurice Wilks realised that Jaguar were having great success in producing and selling their big and fast Mark VII, and that Alvis, Daimler and Armstrong Siddeley were not doing exceptionally well selling cars just that little bit more expensive than the P4. He was prepared to take a gamble that Rover could build a more luxurious car that would compete with Jaguar and steal customers from the likes of Alvis, Daimler and Armstrong Siddeley.

In order to do this P5 would need to be designed by someone with a specialist knowledge in the shaping of cars and the design of interiors. The company's styling office was now developed, and with it Rover's illustrious reputation for designing and producing modern and practical luxury cars would soon be established.

The decision to develop P5 as a larger and more luxurious car that would be aimed at a smaller market meant that it would now be a viable proposition and space could be provided in the existing Solihull factory. Once this decision had been made it was all go, and David Bache was now given the task of shaping the new P5 to Maurice Wilks' wishes.

Jaw-Dropping. That's the best way to describe these four-wheeled winged wonders. "Startling," "futuristic," and "mind-blowing" would work, too. This visually arresting trio of Berlinetta Aerodinamica Tecnicas--B.A.T. for short--were as radical in their day as was the original Lamborghini Countach. B.A.T.5, in photographs, looks remarkably like the Batmobile, but it never was intended to be one. It is rather a symbol of the dynamism and daring of the postwar boom in design in Italy in the 1950s.

M-505 Adams Brothers Probe 16

Other Information
One of only two such cars in the world, this pristine, museum-quality Probe 16, designed and built by the Adams Brothers, represents 'An investigation into extremes of styling'.

Dennis (designer) and Peter (engineer) Adams were, prior to Probe 16, well established with respect to 'futuristic' car construction, based on their contributions to the design and racing success of the Marcos car series.

Of the three Probe 16s built, the first was sold to famous American songwriter Jim Webb and is believed to have been burnt quite early. The second Probe 16 (AB/3) was completed in 1969 and exhibited in the 1969 London Motor Show. With the intention to initiate a British Styling showpiece stand at the '69 Motor Show, the Daily Telegraph Magazine cooperated with the Institute of British Carriage and Automobile Manufacturers to show the Probe 16 on the IBCAM stand – where it obtained a tremendous reception and won the design award as the best British styling exercise.

This second Probe was originally sold to bassist Jack Bruce. It later became the property of a Canadian collector and car designer Dr. Clyde Kwok until 1983. Since then it has been in the private collection of Phil Karam.

The third (and only other) Probe 16 (AB/4) had been displayed at the 'Pollock Auto Showcase' in USA until returned to the U.K. around 1990, by Colin Feyerabend, where it is undergoing a complete rebuild and restoration. He told Phil in 2001 that his Probe was on a hoist, improperly, and it broke in half.

Did he give you a break on the Ticket? $100 sounds cheap for going 68 over the speed limit
